CHAPTER 3 – The Shot That Exposed Everything

Emily screamed as Jonathan collapsed over her.

For one frozen second, the entire diner went silent.

Then chaos exploded.

Customers ducked under tables. Plates shattered. The cook grabbed a frying pan like a weapon. Outside, police officers shouted commands as the shooter tried to run toward the abandoned orphanage.

Jonathan was bleeding from his shoulder, but he refused to let go of Emily.

"Stay behind me," he whispered.

Emily was crying.

"You just found me... You can't leave me now."

Jonathan looked at her with pain in his eyes.

"I lost you once. Never again."

Across the street, the police dragged the shooter from the building.

It was Richard Voss—Jonathan's former best friend, former business partner, and the man who had built an empire from betrayal.

But when officers searched Richard's coat, they found something no one expected.

A second photograph.

It showed Emily as a child...

Standing beside Richard.

Emily's hands began to shake.

"No... Why does he have that?"

Richard laughed even as police forced him to his knees.

"You still don't understand, do you, Jonathan?"

Jonathan's face turned cold.

Richard smiled.

"She didn't disappear by accident. I raised her close enough to watch... but far enough so she'd never remember you."

Emily felt the floor vanish beneath her.

Her entire life had been a lie.

Her adoption.

Her grandmother.

Her childhood.

All of it had been controlled by the man who destroyed her father.

Then Richard looked straight at Emily and said the sentence that made everyone gasp.

"And if she wants the truth about her mother... she knows where to find me."

Jonathan froze.

Emily turned slowly.

"My mother?"

Richard smiled wider.

"Your father told you she died. But billionaires are very good at hiding ugly secrets."

The police pushed Richard into the car, but his final words cut deeper than the gunshot.

"Ask him what really happened that night."

Emily turned to Jonathan.

For the first time since finding her father...

She stepped away from him.

Jonathan reached for her, wounded and desperate.

"Emily, please."

May you like

But she only whispered one question.

"Did you lie to me too?"
