CHAPTER 1 — The Day He Chose Himself

Rain hammered against the tiny kitchen window as twelve-year-old Emily sat silently, pretending to finish her homework. Every few seconds, she glanced toward the front door, hoping the shouting would finally stop.
It didn't.
"You'll never become anything!" Michael Carter roared, throwing another unpaid bill across the room. "I'm tired of living like this!"
His wife, Sarah, wiped tears from her face while trying to shield their younger son, Noah.
"We're your family," she whispered. "Please... don't do this."
Michael laughed—a cold, heartless laugh Emily would remember for the rest of her life.
"My family?" he sneered. "You three are nothing but anchors dragging me to the bottom."
Emily's pencil slipped from her trembling fingers.
"Dad..."
For a brief second, Michael looked at his daughter.
She expected him to hug her.
Instead, he bent down, removed his wedding ring, and dropped it onto the kitchen table.
"I deserve a better life."
Then he walked out.
The sound of the front door slamming echoed through the house like thunder.
Emily sprinted outside barefoot despite the freezing rain.
"DAD! PLEASE COME BACK!"
Michael never looked over his shoulder.
A sleek black luxury car waited at the curb.
A glamorous blonde woman leaned across the passenger seat and smiled as he climbed inside.
The car disappeared into the storm.
Emily collapsed onto the wet pavement, screaming until her voice disappeared.
That night, Sarah gathered her children into a tiny embrace.
"I don't know what tomorrow looks like," she whispered through tears.
"But we'll survive."
They had no idea tomorrow would become a nightmare.
By sunrise, the electricity had been cut off.
Within weeks, the bank seized their home.
Sarah worked three jobs.
Emily quit every school activity to help raise Noah.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Michael posted smiling vacation photos from tropical beaches.
Luxury hotels.
Sports cars.
Expensive watches.
His caption read:
"Sometimes you have to leave the past behind to find happiness."
Thousands liked the post.
Nobody knew he had abandoned two children without a single dollar.
Emily saw the picture.
She quietly closed the phone...
...and made herself a promise.
May you like
"One day...
He'll regret leaving us."
