CHAPTER 4 — The Billionaire's Empire Begins to Collapse

The news spread across America within hours.

"Billionaire Prosecuted by the Daughter He Abandoned."

Television stations replayed the courtroom footage nonstop.

Millions watched Michael Carter break down after hearing Sarah's final letter.

Social media exploded.

People who had once admired him now questioned everything.

His company's stock plummeted.

Investors demanded emergency meetings.

Business partners disappeared overnight.

Sponsors canceled contracts.

The empire he had spent twenty years building began collapsing in less than forty-eight hours.

But none of that hurt as much as what happened next.

After the hearing ended, Michael ran after Emily in the courthouse hallway.

"Emily!

Please...

Just five minutes."

She stopped without turning around.

"I know I don't deserve forgiveness."

Silence.

"I didn't know your mother was sick."

Silence.

"I searched for you."

Emily slowly faced him.

"No."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You searched your own name on magazine covers."

"You searched for bigger houses."

"You searched for richer friends."

"But you never searched for your children."

Michael couldn't answer.

She reached into her bag one final time.

"I have something else."

She handed him a worn, cracked pink notebook.

Emily's childhood diary.

Inside were hundreds of entries.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every Father's Day.

The very first page simply read:

"Dear Dad... I know you'll come home tomorrow."

The next page...

"...Maybe next week."

Then...

"...Maybe next Christmas."

Years later...

The final entry was only one sentence.

"Today I stopped waiting."

Michael dropped to his knees in the middle of the courthouse.

People walked around him without saying a word.

For the first time...

He understood that losing his fortune would be easy.

May you like

Winning back his daughter...

Might be impossible.
