CHAPTER 5 — The Son Who Refused to Call Him "Dad"

Three weeks after the trial began, Michael Carter had lost almost everything that once defined him.
His board of directors voted him out.
His private jet was sold.
His luxury penthouse was seized as part of the financial investigation.
The billionaire who once believed money could solve every problem was suddenly living in a rented apartment overlooking a noisy highway.
Yet none of it mattered.
Every morning, he stood outside the federal courthouse hoping to catch a glimpse of Emily.
Every evening, he wrote another letter she never answered.
Then one rainy afternoon, a familiar face stepped out of a black pickup truck.
Noah.
The little boy Michael had abandoned twenty years earlier.
Except he wasn't little anymore.
He was thirty years old, broad-shouldered, with calloused hands from years of construction work.
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"Noah..."
His son stopped several feet away.
For nearly a minute, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Michael whispered,
"I've dreamed about this moment for years."
Noah laughed bitterly.
"No, you haven't."
Michael lowered his head.
"I know I failed you."
"You don't even know my birthday."
Silence.
"You don't know my favorite food."
Silence.
"You don't know that I broke my arm when I was thirteen."
Silence.
"You don't know Mom called your name every night until she couldn't speak anymore."
Michael's knees nearly gave out.
Noah stepped closer.
"When other kids were learning to ride bikes with their fathers, I was working after school to help pay the rent."
"When Emily cried herself to sleep, I was the one who told her everything would be okay."
"When Mom died..."
His voice finally cracked.
"...I held her hand."
Michael buried his face in his trembling hands.
"I'm so sorry..."
Noah's expression remained cold.
"No."
"You don't get to say sorry."
"You missed twenty years."
Then Noah took one final step forward.
"And one more thing..."
"My children know me."
"They'll never have to wonder whether their father loves them."
Without another word, he walked away.
Michael didn't chase him.

He knew he had no right to.
