CHAPTER 6 — The Secret Sarah Protected Until Her Last Breath

That night, Emily received an unexpected call from the nursing home where Sarah had spent her final weeks.
"There was something your mother asked us to keep safe."
The next morning, Emily and Noah arrived together.
An elderly nurse, now retired, greeted them with tears in her eyes.
"I've been waiting twenty years to give you this."
She placed a small wooden box on the table.
Inside were dozens of unopened letters.
Every envelope had Michael Carter's name written on the front.
Emily stared in disbelief.
"What are these?"
The nurse sighed.
"Your mother wrote one letter every week after he left."
"She believed that someday he would come back."
Noah clenched his jaw.
"He never did."
The nurse nodded sadly.
"She never stopped hoping."
Beneath the letters was one final envelope.
Unlike the others, it was addressed to Emily and Noah.
Emily carefully unfolded it.
"My beautiful children...
If you're reading this, then I've already said goodbye.
Please don't let hatred become your inheritance.
Your father made a terrible choice, but if life ever gives him a chance to become a better man... don't let revenge destroy your own hearts.
Forgiveness is never something you owe.
It is something you choose only if it sets you free.
No matter what happens... promise me you'll keep loving each other.
That's the family I fought to protect.
Love forever,
Mom."
Both siblings sat in silence, tears rolling down their faces.
Neither noticed that someone was standing outside the half-open door.
Michael.
He had followed them, hoping for one chance to apologize.
Instead, he heard every word Sarah had written.
He sank onto a nearby bench, unable to breathe.
Then the elderly nurse walked toward him.
She looked him straight in the eyes before handing him the final unopened envelope.
"It's the only letter she never wanted the children to read."
Michael stared at the words written across the front in Sarah's familiar handwriting.

With shaking hands, he slowly broke the seal...
