CHAPTER 1 – The Goodbye That Didn't Make Sense

Emma was seven months pregnant when she noticed something strange.

Her husband, Ryan, stood silently in their bedroom, stuffing clothes into a black duffel bag. He avoided her eyes as though looking at her would make leaving impossible.

"Business trip?" she asked with a nervous smile, gently resting her hand on her growing belly.

Ryan didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he whispered, "I'm sorry."

Those two words shattered the silence.

Emma's heart skipped a beat.

"What do you mean... sorry?"

Ryan zipped the bag closed.

"I can't do this anymore."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Emma stared at the wedding photo hanging on the wall—the same picture where Ryan had promised to love her forever.

"You're leaving me?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I'm leaving... before things get worse."

"Worse? Ryan, I'm carrying your child!"

He looked away.

"I know."

Tears streamed down Emma's face.

She begged him to stay.

She reminded him of their first apartment, their wedding vows, the baby's tiny heartbeat they had heard together only weeks earlier.

But Ryan refused to look back.

As he reached the door, Emma collapsed onto the bed.

"If you walk out that door," she cried, "our baby will grow up without a father."

Ryan froze.

For three agonizing seconds.

Then he quietly opened the door...

...and disappeared.

Emma sobbed until she noticed something lying beneath the bed.

A folded medical document.

Ryan had forgotten it.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

One sentence instantly drained the color from her face.

Ryan had only six months left to live.
