CHAPTER 7 – The Mother Everyone Believed Was Dead

Ryan stood frozen.
"My mother died when I was twelve."
Vanessa slowly laughed, even as police sirens echoed faintly in the distance.
"No, Ryan."
"She abandoned you."
The words hit harder than any bullet ever could.
Ryan released his grip for a split second.
That was all Vanessa needed.
She pulled a hidden knife from her sleeve and slashed his arm before sprinting toward the front door.
Ryan chased her.
By the time he reached the driveway...
She was gone.
Only a black SUV disappearing into the darkness remained.
Emma rushed outside, wrapping Ryan's bleeding arm with a towel.
"Forget her," she cried. "You're alive. That's all that matters."
Ryan stared at the blood on his hands.
"No."
"If my mother is alive..."
"Then everything I've believed for twenty-eight years is a lie."
The next morning, Ryan and Emma took the flash drive to Detective Michael Hayes, the lead investigator on the bridge attack.
After watching every recording, Hayes looked visibly shaken.
"This isn't just insurance fraud."
"This is organized murder."
One file caught his attention.
A payment made every month for twenty-eight years.
The recipient's name had been hidden.
But the account number led to an isolated estate deep in the Colorado mountains.
The police obtained a search warrant.
Ryan insisted on going.
Emma refused to let him go alone.
Hours later, they arrived at the enormous mansion hidden behind iron gates.
An elderly housekeeper opened the door.
The moment she saw Ryan...
She dropped the tray in her hands.
Her face turned completely pale.
"It... it can't be..."
Ryan stepped forward.
"I'm looking for the woman who lives here."
The housekeeper burst into tears.
"She's been waiting for this day."
Before anyone could ask another question...
A wheelchair slowly rolled into the grand hallway.
An elegant woman in her late fifties appeared.
Silver hair.
Graceful posture.
Cold blue eyes.
Ryan's heart nearly stopped.
She looked exactly like him.
The woman smiled gently.
"My little boy..."
"I've waited twenty-eight years to see you again."
Emma squeezed Ryan's hand.
Neither of them noticed Detective Hayes quietly pulling out his gun.
His eyes were fixed not on the woman...
But on the portrait hanging above the fireplace.
It showed Richard Sterling standing beside the woman.
On the back of the frame was a handwritten message:
"For my wife... the only partner who never got caught."
Detective Hayes whispered under his breath,
"Oh my God..."
"They were working together all along."
At that exact moment...
The mansion doors slammed shut.
Every exit locked automatically.

And from hidden speakers, a calm voice echoed through the house.
"Welcome home, Ryan. This time... no one leaves alive."
