CHAPTER 5 – The Ransom That Made No Sense

Emma couldn't stop staring at the photo.

Ryan was alive.

His face was bruised. One eye was swollen shut. His hands were chained behind a rusted metal chair. A single light bulb hung above him, casting long shadows across the concrete floor.

She covered her mouth to keep from screaming.

Her hands trembled as she dialed the number.

It went straight to voicemail.

Seconds later, another text arrived.

"Don't call again. Bring the insurance documents, not the police. Midnight tomorrow. Warehouse 17. Come alone—or he dies."

Emma's heart pounded.

There was only one problem.

"There is no insurance money," she whispered.

Ryan was still alive.

The policy couldn't pay out until he was legally declared dead.

So why were they demanding money that didn't exist?

Then she remembered something.

Ryan's duffel bag.

After the airport, she had thrown it into the closet without opening every pocket.

She raced upstairs.

Inside a hidden zipper was a small flash drive wrapped in plastic.

A handwritten note was taped to it.

"If anything happens to me, never trust the insurance company."

Emma plugged the drive into her laptop.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Bank transfers.

Secret contracts.

Recorded phone calls.

Then one video began to play.

Vanessa sat across from a wealthy older man in a private office.

Emma's blood ran cold.

She recognized him immediately.

Richard Sterling.

The CEO of Sterling Life Insurance.

The company that had issued Ryan's policy.

Vanessa smiled as she slid a folder across the table.

"When Ryan dies," she said, "we'll cancel the beneficiary using the amended contract. His wife gets nothing."

Richard laughed.

"And the five million?"

"We split it fifty-fifty."

Emma felt sick.

Ryan had never been the target because of cancer.

He had been worth five million dollars the moment he signed that policy.

Before Emma could process what she had just seen...

Her front door suddenly creaked open.

She froze.

She had locked it.

Slow footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Someone was inside the house.

Emma quietly reached for her phone.

But a cold voice spoke from the darkness.

"Don't bother calling the police."

Vanessa stepped into the living room...

Holding a gun.

She smiled.

May you like

Then looked directly at Emma's pregnant belly.

"You should have let your husband die."
