CHAPTER 2 – The Secret He Chose to Carry Alone

Emma couldn't breathe.
Stage IV pancreatic cancer.
No cure.
No hope.
The diagnosis had been made two weeks earlier—the exact day Ryan suddenly became distant.
Everything finally made sense.
He hadn't stopped loving her.
He had been preparing to disappear.
Emma searched through the rest of the papers.
There was a handwritten letter.
It wasn't addressed to anyone else.
It was addressed to their unborn daughter.
"If you're reading this, it means I never got the chance to hold you. Your mother is the strongest person I've ever known. I walked away because I couldn't bear watching both of you lose me one day. I wanted you to remember me as someone who chose your future over his own happiness."
Emma burst into tears.
He wasn't running away.
He was sacrificing himself.
But one page remained inside the envelope.
A life insurance policy.
Five million dollars.
Ryan had secretly listed Emma and the baby as the only beneficiaries.
Everything he owned...
Every dollar...
Every dream...
Was for them.
Emma grabbed her keys and rushed out of the house, desperate to find him before it was too late.
She called.
No answer.
She texted.
Nothing.
Finally...
His phone location appeared at the airport.
Emma drove faster than she ever had before.
She reached the terminal just as Ryan stepped toward the departure gate.
"RYAN!"
The entire airport turned to look.
Ryan slowly turned around.
Tears filled both of their eyes.
Emma ran into his arms.
"I know everything," she whispered.
Ryan's face turned pale.
"I found the diagnosis."
Silence.
Then Emma smiled through her tears.
"You don't get to decide our future alone."
Ryan closed his eyes, expecting pity.
Instead...
Emma reached into her purse and handed him another envelope.
It contained a letter from a specialist she had secretly contacted after noticing his strange symptoms weeks earlier.
The hospital had accepted him into an experimental treatment program.
Ryan's hands trembled.
"What... is this?"
Emma squeezed his hand.
"It's your second chance."
But neither of them noticed the woman standing across the terminal.
She lowered her sunglasses.
Smiled.
And quietly whispered into her phone:
"They found out. Start Plan B."
May you like
The nightmare...
...had only just begun.
