CHAPTER 1 — The Public Humiliation
The applause inside Harrington Global suddenly stopped.
Hundreds of employees turned toward the center stage where the company's quarterly awards ceremony had just begun.
Everyone expected another speech about teamwork.
Instead...
"Daniel Carter, please come to the stage."
Daniel smiled nervously.
For eight years, he had been the employee everyone relied on. He worked late nights, skipped holidays, and even postponed his own wedding to finish projects that saved the company millions.
He thought he was about to receive recognition.
He couldn't have been more wrong.
Standing on stage, Regional Director Melissa Grant folded her arms and looked at him with cold satisfaction.
"Daniel Carter," she announced into the microphone. "After reviewing recent evidence, we've concluded that you leaked confidential company data to a competitor."
The ballroom fell into complete silence.
Daniel blinked.
"What?"
Murmurs spread through the crowd.
"No way..."
"I knew something felt off."
"I always thought he was too perfect."
Daniel's face turned pale.
"There has to be some mistake."
Melissa didn't even look at him.
"We have documents."
"I've never stolen anything."
"You'll have a chance to explain... somewhere else."
Security guards stepped forward.
Not because Daniel had resisted...
But because Melissa wanted everyone watching.
She smiled.
"Effective immediately, you're terminated."
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Someone even pulled out a phone to record.
Daniel looked around the room.
People he had helped for years suddenly avoided eye contact.
His closest teammates lowered their heads.
Nobody defended him.
Nobody.
Melissa handed him a cardboard box.
"Collect your personal belongings."
The audience watched as if it were entertainment.
Daniel slowly placed his company badge inside the box.
His hands trembled.
Eight years...
Gone in thirty seconds.
As he walked toward the exit, whispers followed him.
"Corporate spy."
"Disgusting."
"I can't believe he fooled us."
Just before reaching the door, Daniel stopped.
He turned around one last time.
"If I really betrayed this company," he said calmly, "why won't anyone let me see the evidence?"
Melissa laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"Because guilty people always ask the same question."
The crowd chuckled.
Daniel quietly nodded.
"Then I hope... the truth arrives before it's too late."
He walked out.
The doors closed behind him.
Melissa smiled proudly.
She thought the nightmare was over.
