CHAPTER 10 — The Truth That Saved Everything

At the hospital...

Daniel suddenly opened his eyes.

His first words shocked the doctors.

"The countdown..."

One nurse leaned closer.

"What countdown?"

Daniel ripped the IV from his arm.

"They're attacking the stock exchange!"

Ignoring the pain from his wound, he grabbed his laptop from the bedside table.

The doctors tried to stop him.

He refused.

Within seconds...

He connected remotely to Harrington Global's emergency servers.

Lines of encrypted code raced across the screen.

Richard's partner hadn't planned a simple theft.

He had created an artificial intelligence system designed to trigger thousands of fake transactions, bankrupt the company on paper, and manipulate global markets.

Daniel typed faster.

Access denied...

Then...

A message appeared.

Manual Authorization Required

Only one person still had the authority to stop the attack.

Richard Harrington.

At the abandoned station...

The countdown reached 00:01:00.

Richard looked around.

Surrounded.

Outnumbered.

No escape.

His former friend laughed.

"It's over."

Then...

Every phone in the station vibrated at the same time.

Richard looked down.

A secure video call.

Daniel.

Alive.

Covered in bandages.

Holding his laptop.

"Richard!"

"I can stop this..."

"...but only if you trust me one last time."

Richard smiled through tears.

"I never should have stopped."

He pressed AUTHORIZE.

The final ten seconds disappeared.

The hackers celebrated too early.

Daniel uploaded Project Phoenix directly to federal investigators, every news network, and every international financial regulator simultaneously.

The fake market crash vanished.

The conspiracy's hidden accounts froze.

Arrest warrants were issued in real time.

Silence.

The old partner stared at his phone.

Every offshore account...

Frozen.

Every secret document...

Public.

Every accomplice...

Identified.

Police helicopters roared overhead.

Red and blue lights flooded the station.

The armed men dropped their weapons.

Richard's former friend fell to his knees.

"It's impossible..."

Richard looked at him one last time.

"No."

"The impossible..."

"...was believing loyalty could ever be bought."

Epilogue

Six months later...

Daniel Carter stood on the stage where he had once been publicly humiliated.

The entire company rose to its feet.

This time...

The applause lasted nearly five minutes.

Richard Harrington smiled.

"Today, I am not announcing a promotion."

He handed Daniel a small wooden box.

Inside were the keys to the executive office.

"As of this morning..."

"...Daniel Carter is the new Chief Executive Officer of Harrington Global."

The audience erupted.

Daniel looked around the room.

At the very back stood the janitor who had quietly shaken Daniel's hand on the day he was fired—the only employee who had believed in him.

Daniel walked off the stage and embraced him first.

The crowd fell silent.

"Never judge a person's worth by the moment everyone else turns against them," Daniel said. "Character is revealed when no one is watching."

The room exploded into applause once more. The man who had left the building carrying a cardboard box had returned carrying the future of the entire company.
