CHAPTER 1 — "Daddy... Why Did You Leave Me?"

Nobody noticed the little boy at first.
Inside Terminal 4 of Chicago International Airport, thousands of travelers rushed toward their gates. Rolling suitcases rattled across polished floors. Flight announcements echoed through the ceiling. Businessmen hurried past with coffee in one hand and phones in the other.
To everyone else, it was just another busy Friday morning.
Until a tiny voice cut through the noise.
"Daddy..."
A little boy, no older than five, let go of his mother's hand and sprinted across the crowded terminal.
His small sneakers slapped against the marble floor as terrified travelers jumped out of his way.
"Oliver!" his mother shouted.
But he didn't stop.
Straight ahead stood a sharply dressed billionaire stepping out of a private security escort.
Nathan Carter.
America's youngest aviation billionaire.
The CEO whose face had appeared on Forbes magazine just two weeks earlier.
Surrounded by bodyguards, Nathan barely looked up from the documents in his hands.
Then—
The little boy wrapped both arms tightly around Nathan's leg.
"Daddy..."
Everything froze.
The bodyguards instantly reached for the child.
"Get him away!"
But before anyone could touch him...
The little boy looked up with watery blue eyes.
His tiny lips trembled.
"Daddy... why did you leave Mommy and me?"
Silence.
Complete...
Absolute...
Silence.
Hundreds of passengers stopped walking.
Phones slowly lowered.
Airport employees exchanged confused looks.
Nathan stared at the child as if he'd seen a ghost.
"I... don't know you."
The words sounded hollow.
The boy's smile disappeared.
"You promised..."
His tiny voice cracked.
"You promised you'd come back after the airplanes."
The airport seemed to stop breathing.
Nathan's heart pounded violently.
That sentence...
Only one person had ever used those exact words.
Emily.
The woman he had loved eight years ago.
The woman who had vanished without a trace after a mysterious plane crash investigation.
Impossible.
Emily had told him she was pregnant...
...the night before she disappeared.
Nathan slowly knelt in front of the child.
"What... did you just say?"
The boy reached into his little backpack.
He carefully pulled out an old, folded photograph.
It was faded.
Wrinkled.
Nearly torn apart.
Nathan's hands began to shake before he even touched it.
Because in the picture...
A much younger Nathan was laughing beside Emily...
One hand resting gently on her pregnant belly.
The photo had never been published.
No one else should have had it.
No one.
Nathan's face turned completely pale.
Behind him, every member of his security team exchanged alarmed glances.
Who was this child?
And why did he possess a photograph the world believed had been destroyed forever?
Then the little boy whispered six words that sent chills through every person close enough to hear.
"Mommy said you'd recognize this."
And at that exact moment...
A woman wearing a gray hoodie quietly turned around near the boarding gate...
The instant Nathan saw her face...
The color drained from his own.
May you like
"Emily...?"
