CHAPTER 6: The Man Behind Daniel's Crime Was Someone Emily Called "Family"

Emily couldn't breathe.

Her hands trembled as Detective Sarah paused the surveillance video.

The older man standing beside Daniel wasn't a stranger.

It was Richard Carter.

Her own uncle.

The man who had attended every birthday.

The man who had hugged her after her father's funeral.

The man who had always said, "You're like the daughter I never had."

Emily felt sick.

"No..." she whispered. "He would never..."

Sarah slid another folder across the table.

"I wish that were true."

Inside were decades of financial records.

Richard's construction company had been drowning in debt.

Banks were preparing to seize everything.

Then, six months earlier, Daniel had begun transferring money into secret offshore accounts controlled by Richard.

The payments totaled nearly twelve million dollars.

Emily looked up, stunned.

"He hired Daniel..."

Sarah nodded.

"We believe Daniel wasn't the mastermind."

"He was the weapon."

Emily's world shattered all over again.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Richard had encouraged her to marry Daniel.

Richard had insisted she increase her life insurance.

Richard had even suggested the romantic yacht trip as a way to "save the marriage."

It had all been planned.

For years.

Sarah leaned closer.

"We're not finished."

She pressed play on another recording recovered from the anonymous flash drive.

Richard's voice echoed through the room.

"When she's dead, the company returns to the family."

Daniel replied quietly,

"And if she survives?"

Richard smiled.

"Then make sure no one ever finds her."

Emily covered her mouth.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

She hadn't lost her husband.

She had lost the only family she thought she could still trust.

But Richard had made one fatal mistake.

He believed Emily was already dead.

That same night, Richard scheduled a private meeting with Daniel's remaining hitman to destroy the final evidence.

Neither of them noticed the black SUV parked across the street.

Inside, Emily watched through a camera lens.

Detective Sarah whispered into her radio.

"Everyone stay in position."

Emily tightened her grip on the seat.

"This ends tonight."

Then...

A black sedan sped around the corner.

It ignored every police signal.

It accelerated straight toward Emily's vehicle.

Someone had discovered she was still alive.

And they were coming to finish the job.
