CHAPTER 8: Her Father's Final Letter Destroyed Everything They Had Built

Emily's hands trembled as she broke the wax seal.
The room was silent except for the crackling fire in the old cabin.
She unfolded the yellowed letter.
Her father's familiar handwriting filled the page.
"My dearest Emily, if you're reading this, then I have failed to protect you."
Tears blurred her vision.
"The day your mother died was not an accident."
Emily stopped breathing.
Detective Sarah looked at her in disbelief.
She continued reading.
"Richard wanted control of Carter Global long before you were born. Your mother discovered he had been stealing millions from the company. Two weeks later, her car went off a bridge."
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
Her entire childhood had been built on a lie.
Her mother hadn't died in an accident.
She had been murdered.
The letter continued.
"I gathered enough evidence to send Richard to prison. Before I could go to the authorities, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I knew I wouldn't live long enough to protect you."
Inside the envelope was a tiny brass key.
Sarah searched the lockbox until she found a hidden compartment.
Inside lay a hard drive.
When they plugged it into a laptop, dozens of encrypted files appeared.
Bank transfers.
Secret contracts.
Offshore accounts.
Photos of Richard meeting politicians, judges, and powerful businessmen.
Then they found one final video.
It had been recorded nearly twenty years earlier.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"If anyone ever watches this..."
"...it means my brother refused to cooperate."
A younger Daniel appeared beside him.
Emily gasped.
Daniel looked almost twenty years younger.
"No..." she whispered.
"That's impossible."
Sarah paused the video.
"Emily... how old was Daniel when you met him?"
"Twenty-eight."
Sarah slowly zoomed in on the recording's timestamp.
The video had been made twenty years ago.
Daniel couldn't have appeared in it.
Unless...
The man wasn't Daniel.
It was someone who looked exactly like him.
Sarah enhanced the image.
A passport lying on the desk came into focus.
The name printed across it froze Emily's blood.
DAVID HUNTER.
Richard's biological son.
Daniel's identical twin brother.
Emily stared at the screen in horror.
"Then... who did I really marry?"
Before Sarah could answer, the cabin windows shattered.
A flash grenade exploded across the floor.
Smoke filled the room.
Masked men stormed inside shouting,
"Take the hard drive!"
Emily grabbed the evidence and ran toward the back door.
Behind her, bullets ripped through the walls.
As she escaped into the forest, one chilling thought echoed in her mind.

She had spent ten years believing she knew her husband.
Now she wasn't even sure she knew his real name.
