CHAPTER 1 — THE PHOTO THAT MADE HER FATHER SHAKE

Frank stared at the old photograph as though it had suddenly caught fire.

His rough hands, once steady enough to repair heavy machinery, now trembled uncontrollably.

The smiling young man standing beside him was someone he had spent years trying to forget.

Daniel Brooks.

The youngest engineer ever hired at the Albany Steel Plant.

The man everyone believed had died because of a tragic industrial accident.

But Hannah knew the truth.

She had known it for ten years.

Diane slowly reached for the photograph.

"No..." she whispered.

"It can't be Daniel."

Owen looked from one face to another, confused.

"Mom... who was he?"

Hannah knelt beside her son.

"He was your father."

Silence filled the living room.

Frank suddenly exploded.

"You're lying!"

"He died before you even left this house!"

"I attended his funeral myself!"

Hannah calmly opened the yellow folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Factory reports.

Medical records.

Insurance contracts.

Letters.

All untouched for a decade.

"I didn't come here for forgiveness," she said quietly.

"I came because someone has been lying to this family for ten years."

Frank's breathing became heavier.

"What are you talking about?"

Hannah slowly removed another envelope.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

Patient Name:

Daniel Brooks

Admission Date:

Three days after the factory explosion.

Declared deceased...

Seven days later.

Not the same day everyone had been told.

Frank frowned.

"That's impossible."

"No."

"It's impossible only because someone changed the records."

Diane began crying.

"What happened to Daniel?"

Hannah closed her eyes.

"The night before the explosion..."

"...he came to me."

"He told me someone inside the factory had discovered millions of dollars disappearing through fake safety contracts."

"He said if anything happened to him..."

"...I had to protect our baby."

Frank suddenly stumbled backward.

His knees nearly gave out.

Because he remembered something.

The last conversation Daniel ever had with him.

"If I disappear... trust no one wearing a company badge."

At the time...

Frank thought Daniel was joking.

May you like

Now...

Nothing felt funny anymore.
