CHAPTER 6 — THE MAN WHO WALKED INTO HIS OWN MEMORIAL

Six months after the trial, Albany had finally begun to move on.

The abandoned steel plant was being demolished.

Richard Coleman was serving multiple life sentences.

Harold Mills had vanished into federal custody.

Frank visited Daniel's grave every Sunday without fail.

Each time, he whispered another apology.

Each time, he hoped somehow the young man could hear him.

One rainy afternoon, Hannah received an envelope with no return address.

Inside was only one photograph.

An old military hospital.

On the back, written in careful handwriting, were eight words.

"Some ghosts never died. Come alone if you believe."

Her heart nearly stopped.

She recognized the building immediately.

It was the same hospital listed on Daniel's final medical records.

The records everyone had assumed were forged.

She told no one.

Not even Owen.

The following morning, she drove three hours to the deserted hospital.

Most of it had been abandoned years ago.

Broken windows.

Peeling paint.

Silence.

Only one office remained occupied.

An elderly nurse looked up the moment Hannah walked inside.

"You finally came."

Hannah froze.

"You know who I am?"

The nurse smiled sadly.

"I've been expecting you for ten years."

She opened an old filing cabinet and removed a sealed envelope marked:

FOR HANNAH CARTER ONLY

Inside was a cassette tape.

A faded wedding ring.

And one handwritten sentence.

"If you're reading this... then I couldn't keep my promise."

Hannah burst into tears.

The nurse quietly explained.

Daniel had survived the explosion.

Barely.

He had been placed in a federal witness-protection program after agreeing to testify against powerful executives connected to organized crime.

But before he could appear in court...

His ambulance was attacked.

The convoy was ambushed.

Everyone believed Daniel had died.

Except...

His body had never been recovered.

The nurse looked into Hannah's eyes.

"They searched for him."

"They never found him."

May you like

For the first time in ten years...

Hope returned.
