CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT HAROLD CAME BACK

Frank quietly locked every door.
Daniel pulled Owen behind him.
Hannah's heart pounded.
A flashlight swept across the living-room window.
Then came a familiar voice.
"Daniel..."
"I know you're inside."
Harold Mills.
Older.
Thinner.
But just as dangerous.
"I only need one witness to disappear."
Frank grabbed the old hunting rifle he hadn't touched in years.
Before he could move—
Daniel stopped him.
"No more violence."
Instead, Daniel opened the front door himself.
Harold laughed.
"I knew you'd never let your family die for you."
Daniel smiled calmly.
"I wouldn't."
"But you just confessed."
Harold frowned.
"What?"
Daniel pointed upward.
Across the street.
Dozens of federal agents emerged from unmarked vehicles.
The neighbor's house.
The mail truck.
Even the utility workers.
They had been waiting for hours.
The entire reunion had been carefully planned.
Daniel had known Harold would follow him.
Harold tried to run.
He made it only three steps.
Agents surrounded him instantly.
As officers placed him in handcuffs, Harold stared at Daniel in disbelief.
"You used your own family as bait."
Daniel quietly answered,
"No."
"I trusted my family enough to end this together."
