CHAPTER 8 — THE LIE THAT SAVED A LIFE

Daniel's return stunned the nation.

Every newspaper wanted the story.

But Daniel refused every interview.

Only his family deserved the truth.

That evening, everyone gathered at Frank's house.

Daniel finally explained.

The federal government had hidden him after discovering that Richard Coleman's corruption reached far beyond Albany.

Powerful politicians.

Judges.

International money laundering.

If anyone discovered Daniel was alive...

Every witness involved would be killed.

So officials created a fake death.

Even Hannah wasn't told.

"Why?" Frank whispered.

Daniel looked down.

"Because they believed you'd all be safer if you hated me."

The room fell silent.

Then Daniel revealed something even darker.

"The convoy attack..."

"...wasn't random."

"It was ordered by someone who escaped prison."

Harold Mills.

He had disappeared during a prison transfer three months earlier.

Authorities believed he had fled overseas.

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"He's looking for me."

Almost on cue...

The lights suddenly went out.

Every phone lost signal.

Outside...

May you like

Car doors slammed.

Someone was coming.
