Chapter 3 - The Serpent's Nest

The interrogation room was sterile, illuminated by flickering fluorescent lights that cast harsh shadows over Julian’s sunken features. His legal team sat beside him, looking thoroughly defeated. Across the table sat Vivienne and lead investigator Marcus Vance—her cousin and Vance Enterprises' head of internal security.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Julian sneered, leaning forward, the handcuffs clinking against the metal table. "You think destroying my company makes you a conqueror, Vivienne? You’re just a puppet. You always were."

Vivienne didn't blink. "The evidence is absolute, Julian. The shell accounts in the Cayman Islands, the forged power of attorney documents—you signed your own downfall."

"I didn't act alone," Julian hissed, a dangerous spark in his eyes. "You think this was just about me? You think your precious father is a saint?"

Vivienne’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What are you talking about?"

Julian laughed, a bitter, grating sound. "Ask Alexander why he let you marry me in the first place! Ask him why he stood by for five years while I systematically bled your trust fund dry! You think he didn't know? He knew every single transaction, Vivienne! He approved them!"

The air in the room seemed to thin. Vivienne felt a cold knot form in the pit of her stomach, but she kept her composure. "You're lying to save your skin."

"Check the original underwriting documents for the Apex Tech acquisition," Julian whispered, leaning closer to the glass partition. "Look at the secondary signatures. My mother didn't set up the debt trap, Vivienne. Your father did. He used me to drain your mother's inheritance so you would have no choice but to come crawling back to Vance Enterprises when it all crashed down!"

Vivienne stood up so abruptly her chair scraped loudly against the floor. Without another word, she turned and walked out of the room, ignoring the shouts of Julian's lawyers and the manic laughter of her ex-husband echoing behind her.

Outside the precinct, rain was still falling. Clara was waiting in the back of the car with a laptop open.

"Clara," Vivienne’s voice shook slightly for the first time in twenty-four hours. "Pull up the archival files for the Vance-Apex acquisition five years ago. Access the sub-tier ledger."

"Ma'am? That file is restricted under your father's personal clearance—"

"Bypass it," Vivienne ordered, her tone chillingly sharp. "Now."

Clara worked frantically, her fingers flying across the keyboard. Security protocols flashed red, but using Vivienne's biological override key, the file decrypted. A massive tree of financial transactions expanded across the screen.

Vivienne scanned the digital signatures. There, at the bottom of the original trust transfer—dated three weeks before her wedding to Julian—was Alexander Vance’s digital encryption key.

Her father hadn't just known about Julian's greed; he had facilitated it. He had allowed Julian to ruin her marriage and destroy her financial independence, waiting for the precise moment when she would break, turn to him for help, and hand control of her mother's multi-billion-dollar estate back to Vance Enterprises.

She wasn't just a survivor of a toxic marriage. She was a pawn in a game played by the two men she had trusted most in her life.

Vivienne closed her eyes, taking a deep, slow breath. The pain of the realization lasted for only a second before it hardened into pure, uncompromising rage.

She opened her eyes, looking at her reflection in the dark car window.

"Clara," she said quietly.

"Yes, Ms. Vance?"

"Change the target of our acquisition."

May you like

Clara looked up, startled. "Target? We've already secured Julian Global."

"We're not stopping at Julian Global," Vivienne said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "We are shorting Vance Enterprises."
