Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Gala

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Center was bathed in golden light. The annual Vanguard Gala—the most prestigious gathering of elite business moguls in the country—was in full swing. Alexander Vance stood near the center of the room, surrounded by politicians, foreign investors, and press. He held a champagne flute, accepting congratulations for the brilliant takeover of Julian Global and the triumphant return of his prodigal daughter.

"Alexander, your daughter’s move yesterday was legendary," an elderly Senator praised, patting Alexander on the shoulder. "The market is calling her the new Iron Heiress."

Alexander smiled modestly, though his eyes burned with pride and control. "Vivienne needed to learn how the real world operates. Sometimes, a father must let his child burn her fingers so she learns not to touch the fire."

"And Julian?"

"A minor speed bump," Alexander said smoothly. "He is being handled. My legal team will ensure he spends the next decade behind bars. The Vance legacy remains unsullied."

"Does it?"

A clear, commanding voice cut through the murmur of the crowd.

The orchestra seemed to fade out as the double doors of the ballroom swung open. Vivienne walked in, wearing a stunning silver floor-length dress that shimmered like armor under the chandeliers. But she wasn't alone.

Walking beside her was Marcus Escalando—the driver who had served her for years, but who was now dressed in a tailored Italian tux, looking every bit like a man of supreme authority. Beside him walked two officers from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Alexander’s smile faltered slightly, though he quickly masked it with a paternal expression. "Vivienne, my dear. You're late. We were just celebrating your victory."

"My victory?" Vivienne stopped five feet away from her father, the crowd parting around them like the Red Sea. "Or yours, Father?"

Alexander took a subtle step forward, lowering his voice. "Vivienne, this isn't the venue for your dramatics. Lower your voice."

"I spent five years keeping my voice low," Vivienne replied, her voice amplifying through the quiet room. "I kept it low while Julian stole from me. I kept it low while Eleanor degraded me. And I kept it low while you watched from your glass tower, holding the puppet strings."

The room burst into shocked whispers. Reporters in the balcony above began aiming their cameras down toward the center floor.

"You're tired, daughter," Alexander said, his tone hardening, a subtle threat in his eyes. "The stress of the divorce is getting to you. Step into the study with me."

"I have the Apex Tech sub-ledger, Alexander," Vivienne announced loudly.

Alexander went dead silent. The warmth in his eyes completely vanished, replaced by the terrifying coldness of a predator cornered.

"Five years ago, you funneled forty percent of my mother’s estate into Julian's offshore accounts to induce him into targeting me," Vivienne stated, pulling a encrypted flash drive from her clutch. "You needed a crisis to seize control of the trust funds my mother left me in her will—trust funds that gave me voting control over Vance Enterprises. You bought Julian’s greed so you could keep your throne."

"That is nonsense," Alexander snapped, though a bead of sweat formed at his temple. "Security, escort Ms. Vance to her car immediately!"

"Security works for the primary shareholder," Marcus spoke up, stepping forward. He pulled a black binder from his jacket. "And as of 4:00 PM today, Ms. Vivienne Vance holds fifty-two percent of the voting stock."

Alexander looked at Marcus in shock. "You... you're a chauffeur!"

"I was an undercover asset hired by your late wife’s estate board to monitor the trust," Marcus said coldly, dropping the binder onto a nearby cocktail table. "Your wife knew you were ruthless, Alexander. She set up a fail-safe clause: if you ever attempted to manipulate her daughter's inheritance through third-party proxy fraud, your voting shares would automatically liquidate and transfer to Vivienne."

The financial agents stepped forward. "Alexander Vance, you are under investigation for trust fraud, market manipulation, and grand conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."

The crowd erupted into absolute chaos. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding fury as the great Alexander Vance—the untouchable titan—was escorted out of his own gala in handcuffs, right past the daughter he had tried to break.

Vivienne stood alone in the center of the glittering room, watching her father get dragged into the night. She didn't feel joy. She felt free.
