Chapter 1 - THE BLOODLINE AMBUSH — The Past Returns with a Ransom Note

The first forty-eight hours were deceptively peaceful. Alexander’s sterile, minimalist penthouse was transformed. Two small pairs of sneakers sat by the Italian marble entryway. The scent of expensive espresso was replaced by the rich, sweet aroma of hot chocolate. For the first time in his thirty-eight years, Alexander Blake found himself watching children's cartoons, completely oblivious to the multi-million dollar trades flashing on his phone.

But peace is a luxury men like Alexander are rarely allowed to keep.

On the third morning, a courier delivered a heavy, unmarked black envelope directly to Alexander’s private office at Blake Medical Systems. His secretary looked pale as she handed it over.

Inside was a single glossy photograph of Lily and Chloe sleeping in Alexander's penthouse guest room, taken from a high-angle drone through the glass walls. On the back, written in jagged, hurried handwriting, were words that made Alexander’s blood run cold:

"Thank you for taking care of my investments, billionaire. But blood is thicker than your money. I want them back—or I sell the truth to the media. 20 million dollars by Friday, or I tear your perfect life apart."

Alexander’s grip tightened until the photograph crumpled in his fist. The biological father hadn't abandoned them out of desperation; he had staged the abandonment. It was a calculated setup, a trap waiting for a wealthy savior to take the bait.

"Sir?" his head of security, Marcus, stepped into the office, his face grim. "We tracked the courier. It was a dead end—paid in cash by a man matching the description of the girls' father, Richard Vance. But that’s not the worst part."

Marcus placed a tablet on the desk. "Richard Vance isn't just a deadbeat dad, Alexander. He used to be a high-level lab technician at a rival pharmaceutical firm. He didn't just leave those girls at the bus stop by accident. He chose your route. He knew exactly who you were."

Alexander stood up, his tailored suit feeling like armor. The cold, ruthless CEO the board feared had returned. "Double the security at the penthouse. No one goes in or out. If Richard Vance thinks he can use those children as a lottery ticket, he’s about to find out how I treat people who threaten what's mine."

But as Alexander stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows, a dark thought crept into his mind. How did Vance get past the penthouse’s military-grade security encryption to take that photograph?
