Chapter 3 - The Boardroom CoupThe high-rise glass doors of Vance Tower on Fifth Avenue reflected the harsh morning light as I stepped out of a black town car.

I was no longer wearing the faded jeans and oversized sweaters of a weary housewife. I wore a tailored midnight-blue silk suit, my hair pinned up in an elegant chignon, and a pair of diamond-studded earrings that Aunt Eleanor had bequeathed to me.

Behind me walked Mr. Harrison and a team of four high-powered corporate litigators.

When we stepped into the lobby of Vance Corporate Solutions on the 14th floor, the atmosphere was chaotic. Employees were whispering nervously in small huddles. In the center of the glass-walled conference room stood Julian, screaming at his Chief Financial Officer while Chloe stood nearby, furiously tapping on her phone.

"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?!" Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the glass table. "Unfreeze them! We have a payroll run today!"

"We can't, Mr. Vance," the CFO stammered, holding up a red tablet. "The primary landlord, Vance Real Estate Enterprises, filed an immediate emergency lien for unpaid rent totaling $420,000. They’ve locked our operational reserves!"

I pushed open the heavy glass door of the conference room. The click of my heels echoed off the polished marble floors.

Julian spun around, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He looked like he hadn't slept a second. "Clara?! What the hell are you doing here? Get out before I have security throw you out!"

"Security works for the building, Julian," I said smoothly, pulling off my leather gloves. "And the building belongs to me."

Chloe marched up to me, her manicured finger pointed inches from my face. "You miserable snake! You think you can ruin Julian’s business just because he found a real woman who actually satisfies him? We are going to destroy you in court!"

Without missing a beat, I reached out, grabbed Chloe’s hand by the wrist, and twisted it down just enough to force her back a step. "First off, take off my mother’s pearl earrings before I have you arrested for grand larceny right now."

Chloe gasped, instinctively touching her ears. Pale with humiliation, she unclipped the pearls and tossed them onto the table.

I looked at Julian, who was staring at me as if I were a stranger. "Julian, your company owes $420,000 in past-due rent. Under clause 14-B of your commercial lease agreement, default on payments gives the landlord the right to immediate repossession of the premises and all assets within it."

"You can't do that!" Julian shouted, panic breaking through his posture. "This company is worth fifteen million dollars! We are about to seal an investment deal with Apex Capital!"

"Correction," Mr. Harrison interjected, holding up a file. "Apex Capital was negotiating with Eleanor Vance’s investment branch. And as of 9:00 AM this morning, Apex Capital has formally canceled all talks with your firm due to unstable corporate governance."

Julian’s face went completely ash-grey. He dropped into a chair, grabbing his head in his hands. "You're destroying me... Why are you doing this?!"

"You did this to yourself the moment you brought your mistress into our home, packed my bags in front of my children, and called me a leech," I said, leaning over the table so my eyes were level with his. "You thought I was weak because I chose to dedicate my life to our family. You mistook my kindness for helplessness. Now, you’re going to learn the difference."
