Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut"You're bluffing," Chloe spat out from behind Julian, though her voice shook violently. "You don't have anything! You're just trying to scare us!"

"Am I?" I turned to Mr. Harrison, who tapped his phone screen.
Within ten seconds, the heavy double doors at the end of the courthouse hallway swung open. Three men in dark suits wearing brass badges around their necks walked deliberately down the corridor toward us.
"Julian Vance? Chloe Sterling?" the lead agent asked, stopping directly in front of the group. "I am Special Agent Miller with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division. We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, and grand tax evasion."
"What?!" Chloe screamed, dropping her designer handbag. "No! This is a mistake! It was all Julian’s idea! He told me to open those accounts!"
"Chloe, shut up!" Julian yelled, terror blinding him as he grabbed her arm. "Don't say another word!"
"Get off me, you loser!" Chloe shrieked, shoving Julian violently away. "He made me do it! He told me we were going to take her money and run to Dubai once the divorce went through!"
The hallway erupted into total chaos. The federal agents snapped handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists while Chloe sobbed hysterically, resisting as another agent cuffed her hands behind her back.
Julian looked at me through the sea of arresting officers, his eyes pleading, filled with absolute terror. "Clara! Please! Think of the kids! You can't let them take me to prison!"
"I am thinking of the kids, Julian," I said softly, watching him get led away. "That's why I'm making sure they never have to grow up under the influence of a liar and a thief."
With Julian and Chloe hauled away to federal holding, the custody hearing was an immediate slam dunk. The judge granted me sole legal and physical custody of Maya and Liam, revoking all of Julian’s visitation rights pending the outcome of his criminal trial.
When I walked out of the courthouse that afternoon, the sun felt warmer than it had in eleven long years. The dark cloud that had hovered over my life had finally dissolved.
But as I sat in the back of my car, heading home to my children, Mr. Harrison received a sudden, urgent phone call.
He listened for a few moments, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper until his face became a mask of deep concern. He ended the call and turned to me.
"Clara... we have a serious problem."

"What is it?" I asked, my pulse quickening.
"Julian’s father, Arthur Vance... he just checked out of his private medical facility in Boston," Mr. Harrison said grimly. "And he just filed a lawsuit claiming that Eleanor Vance’s original will was a forgery."
