Chapter 6 - Shadows of the PastArthur Vance was a man I had only met twice in my life—a sinister, calculating patriarch who had abandoned Julian and his mother decades ago after ruining dozens of family businesses through gambling debts and shady corporate takeovers.

He was a ghost from the past, a dangerous shadow that Aunt Eleanor had fought bitterly against for over thirty years.
The next morning, Arthur Vance appeared on television, holding a news conference on the steps of the New York Supreme Court. He looked frail, leaning on a silver-topped cane, but his eyes were razor-sharp, burning with malicious intent.
"My late sister-in-law, Eleanor Vance, suffered from severe vascular dementia in the final years of her life," Arthur claimed smoothly to the sea of microphones. "Clara Vance manipulated an elderly, sick woman into signing over the family dynasty, disinheriting my son Julian and seizing assets that rightfully belong to the original Vance bloodline. We are demanding an immediate freeze on all trust assets!"
Within hours, a judge issued a temporary injunction, freezing my access to the $24 million inheritance and the controlling shares of Vance Tower pending an emergency evidentiary hearing.
I sat in my living room, staring at the television screen in disbelief.
"How could a judge freeze everything based on his word alone?" I asked Mr. Harrison, my voice trembling with sudden frustration.
"Arthur has deep pockets backed by a syndicate of offshore investors who want to strip Vance Tower of its assets," Mr. Harrison explained, pacing across the room. "They are funding his legal team. If Arthur can prove even a sliver of mental incapacity on Eleanor’s part when she updated her trust in 2018, the court could void the entire trust and revert the estate to the nearest living male heir—which would be Arthur."
"My aunt was completely sharp until the day she died!" I snapped, standing up. "She knew exactly what she was doing!"
"We know that, Clara. But in a court of law, perception is reality," Mr. Harrison said grimly. "And Arthur has produced a medical report signed by Dr. Robert Hayes—Eleanor’s former private physician—stating she was suffering from cognitive decline as early as 2017."
I felt a sudden cold chill run down my spine. Dr. Robert Hayes.
I remembered that name. Two years ago, when Aunt Eleanor was still alive, she had abruptly fired Dr. Hayes and threatened to report him to the medical board. I had never asked why at the time, assuming it was just a minor dispute over care.
Now, I realized it was something far more sinister.

"Dr. Hayes was bribed," I whispered, my mind connecting the dots. "Arthur bought him off years ago to lay the groundwork for this exact moment!"
"If that’s true, we need proof, Clara," Mr. Harrison said. "Because without hard evidence to discredit Dr. Hayes’s medical report, the judge will freeze your assets indefinitely, and Julian’s criminal defense team will use this to throw out the wire fraud charges against him!"
