Chapter 4 - The Poisoned WellTwo weeks passed. The news of the dramatic split and the sudden rise of Clara Vance had sent shockwaves through the elite financial circles of New York.

Julian’s firm was in absolute freefall. His clients were abandoning him in droves, terrified of being caught in the crossfire of a public, high-stakes legal war with the Vance Trust. Desperate to salvage his reputation, Julian scheduled a prime-time television interview with a national tabloid news network.
Sitting under the bright studio lights alongside Chloe, Julian put on the performance of a lifetime. He dabbed at fake tears, painting himself as a dedicated father and hard-working entrepreneur who had been mercilessly stabbed in the back by a power-hungry, vindictive ex-wife.
"She hid millions from me for years," Julian lied smoothly to the interviewer, his voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "I sacrificed everything to build my firm, and the moment she inherited her family’s fortune, she tried to alienate my children from me and destroy my livelihood. She’s mentally unstable, fueled by bitterness and rage."
Chloe chimed in, squeezing Julian’s hand tightly. "All we want is peace and a fair resolution for the children. But Clara is using her money as a weapon to destroy a good man."
I watched the broadcast from the quiet comfort of my study, a glass of pinot noir in my hand.
"Should we release the counter-statement, Mrs. Vance?" asked Sarah, my newly appointed corporate PR director, standing near the desk. "The internet is already turning against him, but this interview is gaining traction."
"No," I replied, a cold smile touching my lips. "Let him dig his hole deeper. When a man is digging his own grave, you don't take away his shovel."
The next morning, Julian filed an emergency motion in family court demanding full custody of Maya and Liam, alleging that my "sudden financial windfall and erratic behavior" made me an unfit mother. He also requested an immediate temporary spousal support order of $100,000 a month.
When we met in the family courthouse three days later, Julian walked in with a smug smirk, flanked by a high-profile celebrity divorce lawyer named Victor Vance (no relation to my family).
"Mrs. Vance," lawyer Victor said smugly outside the courtroom doors. "My client is prepared to drop the custody battle if you agree to a lump-sum settlement of eight million dollars and sign over forty percent of Vance Corporate Solutions back to him."
I looked at Julian, who was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, acting like he had already won.
"Tell me, Julian," I said quietly. "Did you really think I didn't know about the shell accounts in the Cayman Islands?"
Julian’s posture went instantly rigid. His eyes darted nervously to his lawyer.
"What are you talking about?" Julian sneered, though his voice lacked conviction.
"For three years, you were skimming funds from your own firm’s clients and transferring them into an off-shore entity registered under Chloe Sterling’s maiden name," I said, pulling a USB drive from my purse. "You thought I was just doing medical transcription late at night. You forgot that medical transcription requires extreme attention to detail, line-by-line verification, and an obsessive eye for data anomalies. I stumbled upon your financial routing logs seven months ago."

Julian went dead silent. The blood drained from his face so quickly I thought he might faint right on the polished courthouse floor.
"I kept quiet back then because I wanted to believe you were just making a stupid mistake," I continued, stepping closer to him. "I wanted to save our marriage for our kids. But you didn't just break our marriage, Julian. You committed federal wire fraud and tax evasion."
