CHAPTER 1 – The Woman He Left Behind

The terminal remained frozen in silence.
Claire never answered Grant's request.
"Not here?" she repeated softly.
Her voice carried no anger. No bitterness. That frightened Grant more than any scream ever could.
"You said the same thing three years ago," she continued. "Not here. Not today. Not now."
Each sentence landed like another crack across the polished marble floor.
Grant opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
The four little boys looked between their parents with confused gray eyes that mirrored his own.
The smallest one squeezed Claire's hand.
"Mommy... why is Daddy sad?"
The innocent question echoed through the private terminal.
Several passengers quietly lowered their phones, suddenly realizing they were witnessing something far more painful than celebrity gossip.
Grant slowly knelt until he was eye level with the children.
He stared at them.
Four identical faces.
Four sons.
Yet he couldn't tell which child had spoken.
His throat tightened.
"What... what are their names?" he whispered.
Claire closed her eyes.
For one long second, she almost looked sorry for him.
Then she answered.
"You really don't know."
Grant felt his heart drop.
"I..."
"You've wired millions into trust funds," Claire said calmly. "You've paid for the best schools before they even started preschool. Every birthday, expensive gifts arrived with your assistant's signature."
She paused.
"But you've never called."
"Never visited."
"Never asked."
She looked toward the boys.
"This is Ethan."
The oldest smiled politely.
"This is Noah."
Another gave a shy wave.
"This is Lucas."
The third clutched his teddy bear tighter.
"And this..."
She gently brushed the youngest boy's hair away from his forehead.
"...is Oliver."
Oliver looked directly into Grant's eyes.
"Hi, Daddy."
Grant completely broke.
Tears blurred his vision.
He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking.
Yet four simple names destroyed him.
Across the room, Brielle stood perfectly still.
Everything Grant had told her suddenly unraveled.
"You said," she whispered, barely audible, "you were already divorced."
Grant couldn't answer.
Claire did.
May you like
"He wasn't."
Silence swallowed the terminal.
