CHAPTER 2 – The Secret Claire Never Told Anyone

An hour later, the private lounge sat empty except for six people.
Grant.
Claire.
And four little boys quietly coloring on airport activity books.
No lawyers.
No assistants.
No public relations team.
Just the family Grant had abandoned.
Outside, the Whitmore private jet waited on the runway.
Nobody boarded.
Grant watched the boys share crayons without arguing.
They looked nothing like the spoiled children newspapers often associated with billionaire families.
Their jackets were carefully patched.
Their sneakers had been repaired more than once.
Claire noticed where he was looking.
"I sold most of my jewelry."
Grant stared at her.
"The jewelry you gave me paid hospital bills."
His breathing stopped.
"The trust fund..."
"I never touched it."
Grant frowned.
Claire quietly slid a thick envelope across the table.
Every monthly transfer.
Every dividend.
Every investment distribution.
Untouched.
Accumulating.
More than forty million dollars.
Grant looked up in disbelief.
"Why?"
Claire's answer was immediate.
"Because I promised myself they would never grow up believing love could be replaced with money."
Grant lowered his head.
For years, he had convinced himself he had fulfilled every responsibility.
Instead...
He had only paid invoices.
Claire reached into her worn leather tote.
She removed another envelope.
This one looked much older.
Yellowed.
Creased.
Still sealed.
"I was supposed to give you this the day the boys were born."
Grant carefully opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
His own father's handwriting.
The father who had died two weeks before the quadruplets arrived.
Grant's hands began trembling.
"I never knew this existed..."
Claire nodded.
"He asked me to wait until you were ready."
Grant unfolded the final page.
His face instantly lost all color.
Because at the bottom...
was a sentence that changed everything he thought he knew about his family.
"The greatest mistake I ever made was teaching you that success mattered more than coming home."
Grant could barely breathe.
He suddenly understood.
His father had not built the empire.
May you like
He had built the prison.
And Grant had willingly locked himself inside it.
