CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WASHING DISHES HAD A PLAN

Richard Bennett stared at the stack of dirty plates.
Just weeks ago, celebrities had waited months for a reservation at his restaurant.
Now...
He was scrubbing grease from frying pans in the very kitchen owned by the son he had spent his life destroying.
Every employee recognized him.
Some whispered.
Some laughed.
Others pretended not to notice.
Richard lowered his head.
For the first time in decades...
No one feared him.
Ethan never insulted him.
He never mocked him.
He simply treated Richard like every other employee.
Clock in.
Do your job.
Clock out.
That hurt far more than revenge.
One rainy evening, Richard noticed a little girl sitting outside the restaurant with her grandmother. They looked at the menu, counted a few dollar bills, then quietly walked away.
Without thinking, Richard ran after them.
"Please... come back."
He cooked them the best steak he had made in years.
No cameras.
No applause.
No payment.
The little girl smiled and hugged him.
"My grandma says you're a good man."
Richard nearly broke down.
No one had called him that in years.
Watching from the security camera upstairs, Ethan said nothing.
Gabriel quietly smiled.
"People don't change because they're punished," Gabriel said.
"They change when they finally understand the pain they caused."
Days later, Ethan received an anonymous envelope.
Inside was a flash drive.
No name.
No return address.
Only one handwritten sentence:
"Richard wasn't the only villain."
Ethan played the video.
His entire body froze.
It showed a secret meeting recorded twenty-eight years earlier.
Several powerful investors sat around a table.
One of them pushed a thick contract toward Richard.
Another voice said something that changed everything.
"If Gabriel refuses to sell his recipes..."
"...make sure he disappears."
Richard looked terrified.
Then...
He signed the paper.
Ethan realized his father hadn't created the conspiracy.
He had become trapped inside it.

And the people behind it...
were still alive.
