Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAIL OF BETRAYAL

The silence that followed Mónica’s chilling revelation felt heavier than the concrete walls of the Narvarte apartment. For a agonizing minute, the only sound in the room was the ragged, wheezing breath of Doña Amalia and the low hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Julián didn't lower his phone. The flashing red dot of the camera recording indicator felt like a glowing beacon of truth in a room built entirely on lies.
"What did you just say?" Julián’s voice was dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.
Mónica’s face flickered between panic and cold calculation. Seeing that her usual arsenal of tears and manipulation wasn't working, she dropped the innocent-wife facade completely. Her shoulders straightened, a bitter, contemptuous sneer twisting her lips.
"You heard me, Julián," she spat, crossing her arms over her chest. "That land in Valle de Bravo. The prime commercial property your grandfather left your mother, valued at over six million four hundred thousand pesos. It’s not yours anymore. In fact, it hasn't been yours for the last eight months."
Doña Amalia whimpered, burying her face in her trembling hands. "She made me sign, Julián... She brought a lawyer to the house when you were working a double shift. She said if I didn't sign it over, you would be fired from your firm because of her debts. She said she was protecting you..."
Julián’s knees nearly buckled. That land wasn't just a piece of real estate; it was the ancestral heart of the Herrera family, a legacy meant to secure his mother's medical care and his future children's education. He had trusted Mónica completely. He had given her power of attorney to handle household expenses while he buried himself in work to pay off medical bills.
"You manipulated an invalid," Julián whispered, horror dawning on him. "You starved her of her medications, weakened her physically and mentally, so she wouldn't have the capacity to resist signing legal documents."
"I call it efficiency," Mónica laughed—a sharp, ugly sound. "Do you honestly think I was going to spend the best years of my youth wiping drool and cleaning bedpans for a paralytic woman? I secured my future. And if you publish that video, or if you call the police, I will claim you both abused and neglected an elder, and that you forced me to forge those documents under threat of violence. Trust me, Julián, the courts will believe the sweet, helpless wife over an exhausted accountant with a failing career."
She stepped past him, grabbing her designer handbag off the dresser.
"I’m going out. When I come back in two hours, I expect you to have packed your mother's things for a public nursing home in Ecatepec. Think carefully about what you do next."
The front door slammed shut, echoing like a gunshot through the apartment.
Julián stood frozen for a second, then dropped to his knees beside his mother’s bed. He pulled her into his arms, tears finally breaking free.
"I'm so sorry, Mom. I'm so, so sorry."
"Don't let her take me away, son," Doña Amalia wept, clutching his shirt. "And don't let her steal what your grandfather left you. She’s... she’s not working alone, Julián. The lawyer who came here... he wasn't a stranger."
Julián pulled back, wiping his eyes. "What do you mean?"
"Before she left... I heard her on the phone in the hallway last week. She was talking to your brother... to Fabián."

Julián’s blood ran completely cold. Fabián—his younger brother, the charismatic, high-spending corporate lawyer living in high-end Santa Fe.
The plot wasn't just a cruel betrayal by a greedy wife. It was a family conspiracy.
