Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AND THE RESTORATIONTwo weeks later, the legal storm cleared with the speed of a hurricane.

The forged property transfer for the Valle de Bravo land was declared null and void by a federal judge, restoring full ownership back to Doña Amalia Herrera. Licenciado Garza’s notary license was permanently revoked, and he agreed to cooperate fully with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence, handing over documents proving that Fabián had engineered at least three other fraudulent property grabs from vulnerable elderly clients across Mexico City.
Fabián and Mónica were remanded to the North Prison and Santa Martha Acatitla detention facilities respectively, awaiting trial on multiple felony counts of elder abuse, extortion, forgery, and conspiracy to commit murder. Bail was denied due to flight risk and the severity of the charges.
Back in the Narvarte apartment—now thoroughly cleansed of its dark memories—a quiet afternoon sun streamed through the living room window.
Doña Amalia sat in her favorite armchair, wrapped in a warm, soft blanket, sipping sweet chamomile tea from her favorite porcelain cup. Her color had returned, her physical therapy was progressing under the care of a certified nurse funded by the recovered estate assets, and her eyes sparkled with life once more.
Julián walked in carrying a fresh mosaic gelatin dessert and a bouquet of white calla lilies.
He placed them on the coffee table and smiled down at his mother.
"You know, Mom," Julián said, pulling up a chair beside her, "Mateo called this morning. The Valle de Bravo property buyer actually turned out to be an eco-tourism developer who wants to lease a portion of the land for a botanical sanctuary, paying monthly royalties that will cover your medical expenses for the rest of your life ten times over."
Doña Amalia smiled softly, reaching out to pat her son's cheek. "Your grandfather always said that land was blessed, Julián. It protected our family through hard times, and now it’s taking care of us again."
"And what about you?" Julián asked gently. "Are you ready for a little road trip next weekend? Mateo offered to drive us out to see the property in person."
May you like
"Only if we stop for sweet bread along the way," Doña Amalia laughed, her voice strong and clear.
Julián laughed too, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders that he hadn't even realized he was carrying. He had lost a wife and a brother in the span of a single terrifying week, but he had saved his mother, reclaimed his family's honor, and proved that truth and justice, no matter how deeply buried under greed and betrayal, will always claw their way back into the light.
