Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE DARKJulián slammed his laptop shut just as the study door pushed open.

Mónica stood in the doorway, her coat half-off, looking flushed and agitated. Behind her loomed a tall, impeccably dressed man with slicked-back hair and cold, calculating eyes—his brother, Fabián.

Fabián smirked, leaning against the doorframe.

"Well, well. Look who’s playing detective in the dark," Fabián said, his voice dripping with condescending amusement. "Rough night, little brother?"

Julián stood up slowly, keeping his body positioned to block the laptop. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, but his voice was eerily calm.

"You both are monsters," Julián said quietly. "Starving an elderly woman, forging signatures, and plotting her death for a piece of land?"

Mónica scoffed, tossing her keys onto the desk. "Oh, please, save the cheap melodrama for a soap opera, Julián. Your mother is old, frail, and living on borrowed time anyway. We just optimized her departure to secure a future that you, with your miserable accountant salary, could never provide."

Fabián stepped forward, adjusting his expensive silk tie.

"Be smart, Julián," Fabián warned, his tone shifting from mockery to cold menace. "We know you found some papers. But reality is a game of leverage. Sign this waiver acknowledging that our mother willingly gifted the Valle de Bravo property of her own free will, and we’ll let you keep this dingy Narvarte apartment in the divorce settlement. If you fight us tomorrow at the notary... you’ll lose your job, your reputation, and your mother will spend her final days in a state-run charity ward while you face criminal charges for financial fraud."

They thought they had won. They thought he was trapped, cornered, and helpless.

Julián looked at his brother—the man he had shared a childhood with—and then at the woman he had foolishly loved. A grim, terrifying smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"You really think I came home early by accident today?" Julián asked softly.

Mónica’s expression faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the fact that Mateo Santiago has already reviewed every single file on that desk," Julián lied smoothly, playing his highest card. "And right now, the Federal Prosecutor's Office has copies of your financial records, the forged medical certificates, and the audio recordings of you two discussing intentional medical neglect."

Fabián’s face drained of color. "You're bluffing. You don't have—"

"Try me," Julián interrupted, pulling his phone out and pressing a button.

From the phone's speaker, Fabián’s own voice echoed loudly through the study: "The dosage of the blood thinner I told you to withhold is doing its job... a stroke-induced cardiac arrest looks completely natural..."

Mónica shrieked, lunging forward to grab the phone, but Julián sidestepped with lightning speed, shoving her back against the bookshelf.

"The trap is already set," Julián whispered, stepping past them toward the hallway where his mother was resting safely. "Tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m., at Licenciado Garza's office, we’ll see whose signature holds up under forensic scrutiny."

He grabbed his laptop, walked out of the apartment, locked the door from the outside, and left them standing in absolute, paralyzed terror.
