Chapter 11 - The Shadow Alliance

Six months after the public humiliation of the Bennett family, Richard was living in a damp, windowless basement apartment on the outskirts of Alexandria, Virginia. The air smelled of mildew and stale grease. Evelyn, whose blood pressure spiked every time she saw a woman wearing pearls on TV, spent her days screaming at Richard from a broken armchair, blaming him for letting "that ungrateful orphan" steal their rightful place in society.

Their fallen world shifted on a Tuesday night when a knock echoed against their thin wooden door.

Richard opened it to find a tall man in a bespoke charcoal suit, flanked by two burly bodyguards. His silver hair was slicked back, and his ice-blue eyes exuded pure, refined malice.

"Richard Bennett?" the man asked, his voice smooth as velvet.

"Who are you?" Richard stammered, pulling his stained jacket tightly over his chest.

"I am Sterling Vance," the man replied, stepping uninvited into the foul-smelling apartment. "Laura’s estranged uncle. And the man who was ousted from Vance Global Capital ten years ago when your wife staged a hostile takeover of my shareholding."

Evelyn gasped, sitting up straight. "A Vance? You’re her family?"

"I am her blood, but we are certainly not family," Sterling sneered, looking around the room with disgust. "Laura is a ruthless viper. She destroyed me, just as she destroyed you. But unlike you, Richard, I have spent the last decade building an offshore financial syndicate in London. I have forty billion dollars behind me, and I am here to offer you a deal."

Richard’s eyes lit up with desperate greed. "What kind of deal?"

"Laura’s power rests on one thing: the legal trust left behind by your late father, Arthur Bennett Sr.," Sterling said, leaning on his silver-tipped cane. "My investigators found a clause in that trust. If we can prove Laura was legally incompetent or acted with malicious fraud at the time she assumed control of Vance Capital, the entire inheritance reverts to the nearest surviving male heir. Namely... you."

Evelyn clasped her hands together in ecstatic prayer. "I knew it! I knew God wouldn't let that common girl win!"

"There’s a catch," Sterling warned, dropping a thick red folder onto the sticky coffee table. "We need to make Laura break. We need her to commit an act of public violence or parental instability. Once she snaps, we file for emergency custody of your daughters, seize control of the trust assets, and strip her of every penny."

Richard looked at the folder, his jaw tightening. "What do I have to do?"

"Next week is Sophie’s tenth birthday," Sterling smiled wickedly. "Laura is hosting an exclusive charity gala at Riverridge Manor. You are going to crash it—with the press, the police, and a fraudulent court injunction in tow."
