Chapter 4 - Unraveling the "Little Job"

The silence in the room was absolute. Richard stared at me as if I had spoken in a foreign language.

"You're lying," he whispered, a nervous laugh escaping his lips. "You work from home! You write small marketing reports for local businesses! I saw your laptop!"

"You saw what I allowed you to see, Richard," I said, gesturing for him to take a seat across from Arthur. Richard sank into the leather chair, his confidence visibly hemorrhaging out of him.

Arthur pushed a thick stack of documents across the glass desk.

"Mr. Bennett," Arthur began, his voice dry and authoritative. "Eleven years ago, prior to your marriage, Ms. Laura Vance established Vance Global Capital. When you launched Bennett Technologies eight years ago, your firm was on the verge of bankruptcy within six months. Ms. Vance covertly injected three million dollars into your entity through a shell holding company, securing a seventy percent equity stake and primary debt holding."

Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "She... you... gave me the money?"

"I saved your company," I said, leaning against the desk. "Because I loved you. I believed that if I gave you the resources to build your dream, you would grow into a confident, loving husband and father. But instead, the tiny bit of success you achieved turned you into an arrogant coward. You let your mother demean me. You let her treat our daughters like second-class citizens."

"Laura, wait!" Richard stood up, his hands shaking. "If you own the debt... then yesterday, the country estate where we hosted the party..."

"Is owned by my real estate holding firm," I finished his sentence. "You paid fifty thousand dollars to rent my own lawn for a weekend. And the invoice you submitted to Vance Capital for reimbursement this morning? Denied."

Richard clutched his chest. "Denied? Laura, that party cost over two hundred thousand dollars! I put it on the corporate credit cards!"

"Which have been frozen as of six o'clock this morning," Arthur added calmly. "Furthermore, Vance Capital is calling in the loan default notice due to breach of fiduciary duty and unauthorized corporate expenditure."

"You're bankrupting me?!" Richard screamed, turning on me with fury in his eyes. "After eleven years of marriage?!"

"You bankrupted yourself the moment you watched your mother take food from your daughters' hands and told me, 'Don't start anything,'" I replied, my voice dropping to a icy whisper. "You wanted a quiet afternoon, Richard? You're about to get a very quiet life."
