Chapter 3 - The Front Door Confrontation

Richard stormed through the double mahogany doors of the estate, his eyes wide, his hair unkempt, and his jacket wrinkled. He looked around the soaring foyer—with its marble floors, floating double staircase, and multi-million-dollar modern artwork—like a man who had accidentally stepped onto an alien planet.

"What is this place?" Richard demanded, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Who owns this? Did your boss lend you a guest house? Laura, if you broke into someone’s property—"

"I didn't break in, Richard," I said, walking down the marble stairs with measured grace.

He stared at me. He had never seen me like this. For eleven years, I had worn plain jeans, modest sweaters, and tied my hair up in simple clips to avoid outshining him or making Evelyn feel threatened. Today, I wore custom tailored silk, my hair fell in flawless waves, and on my wrist sat a platinum Patek Philippe watch—a gift to myself when Vance Capital hit its first billion in assets under management.

"You look... different," Richard stammered, taking a step back. "Where did you get those clothes? Where are the girls?"

"They are eating breakfast prepared by my chef," I replied smoothly, stopping on the bottom step so I looked down at him. "The same breakfast your mother stole from their plates yesterday."

"Laura, drop the act!" Richard snapped, trying to regain his dominant posture. "I don't know whose house this is, but you need to pack your bags right now. My mother is waiting. Bennett Technologies is expanding, and I cannot have my wife acting like a lunatic!"

"Bennett Technologies isn't expanding, Richard," I said softly. "In fact, by 9:00 AM today, Bennett Technologies will cease to exist."

Richard froze. "What are you talking about?"

I nodded toward the study. Sitting behind a massive glass desk was Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner of Washington's most formidable corporate law firm.

"Richard, meet my chief legal counsel," I said. "And the trustee of Vance Global Capital."

Richard’s face drained of color. "Vance... Capital? That’s the venture capital firm that backed my series A funding... the firm that owns seventy percent of my company’s debt..."

"No, Richard," I corrected him with a cold smile. "Vance Capital is me."
