Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Ambush

By 11:00 AM, word had leaked to the board of Bennett Technologies.
Richard frantically called his executive team, but every line went straight to voicemail. panicking, he sped to the company’s headquarters in downtown Tysons Corner, hoping to rally his co-founders and convince them that his wife was suffering a psychological breakdown.
When he burst into the executive boardroom, he didn't find his loyal partners waiting to support him.
Sitting around the long oak table were the top five board members, all sitting rigid and pale. At the head of the table sat Evelyn Bennett, who had arrived early expecting a victory celebration brunch.
"Richard!" Evelyn cried out, clutching her pearls as he entered. "Thank goodness you're here! These people are saying terrible things! They're saying some corporation has taken over our accounts! And where is that useless wife of yours? She was supposed to bring my coffee an hour ago!"
"Mother, shut up!" Richard yelled, slamming his hand on the doorframe.
Evelyn gasped, horrified. "Richard! How dare you speak to your mother like—"
The door at the far end of the boardroom opened.
I walked in, flanked by two armed corporate security guards and a team of forensic accountants. The entire room stood up out of instinct—except Evelyn, who glared at me with pure venom.
"What is this trash doing here?!" Evelyn spat, pointing a manicured finger at me. "Security, remove this woman immediately! She doesn't belong in a place like this!"
"Actually, Mrs. Bennett," the lead board member said, his voice trembling, "she owns the building. And the company."
Evelyn stopped mid-sentence. "What?"
I took my seat at the head of the boardroom table, motioning for my team to set down their laptops.
"Evelyn," I said softly, looking her dead in the eye. "For eleven years, you reminded me that I came from nothing. You called my career a 'little job.' You told my daughters they weren't good enough because they weren't boys. You took their food away yesterday because you thought I had no power to stop you."
I pressed a button on the conference room console. The giant screen on the wall illuminated, displaying a series of bank transfers and real estate deeds.
"Let me introduce you to my 'little job,'" I continued. "I am the majority owner of Vance Global, the principal creditor of Bennett Technologies, and as of ten minutes ago, the sole owner of the condominium building you currently live in."

Evelyn’s face turned bright red, then ghostly white. "My... my condo?"
"You're three months behind on your HOA fees and property taxes," I said calmly. "Richard was paying them using company money. Money that belonged to me. The eviction notice was served to your front door twenty minutes ago."
