Chapter 13 - The Unraveling Trap

"She threatened him!" Evelyn screeched to the news cameras recording the scene. "Did you hear that?! She threatened violence! She’s mentally unstable! Arrest her!"
The lead deputy hesitated, looking uncomfortable under my steady, unfazed gaze.
"Deputy," I said, pointing to the ceiling. "Do you know what those small black domes are?"
The deputy looked up at the high decorative ceiling. "Security cameras, ma'am?"
"They aren't just security cameras," I said smoothly, taking a small remote from my pocket. "They are high-definition, military-grade biometric sensors connected directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division."
Sterling’s smirk wavered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
I pressed a button on the remote. The massive projection screens behind the orchestra—which had been showing childhood photo slideshows of Sophie—suddenly flickered and changed.
A bank statement written in bold red letters illuminated the room, followed by audio recordings playing through the ballroom’s surround-sound system.
“If we can prove Laura was legally incompetent... we seize control of the trust assets...” Sterling Vance’s recorded voice echoed through the room with crystal clarity. “I’m transferring two million dollars into Judge Miller’s offshore account in the Bahamas to ensure he signs the emergency custody injunction without a hearing...”
The entire ballroom gasped. The reporters immediately turned their lenses away from me and zoomed in on Sterling and Richard.
Sterling’s face went ghastly white. "Where... how did you get that?"
"Did you really think I didn't know you arrived in Virginia five days ago, Sterling?" I asked, taking a step toward him. "Did you really think the real estate company that rented you your luxury suite in Arlington wasn't owned by Vance Capital? Every room you stepped into was wiretapped by federal authorities."
Two men in dark suits stepped out from behind the velvet curtains near the balcony. They flashed gold badges.
"Sterling Vance," Special Agent Miller of the FBI announced loudly. "You are under arrest for federal judge bribery, conspiracy to commit fraud, and money laundering."
May you like
"What?!" Richard screamed, taking a step back in pure terror. "No! I didn't know about the bribe! Sterling made me do it!"
"Richard Bennett," the agent continued, pulling out a second pair of handcuffs. "You are under arrest as a co-conspirator in federal judicial bribery and wire fraud."
