Chapter 17 - The Final Courthouse Destruction

The next morning, inside the high-arched courtroom of the Virginia Probate Division, Evelyn Bennett sat in the front gallery, wearing a faded coat she had bought from a thrift store. She still held her head high, clinging to her foolish delusion that she was a noble matriarch.

Richard sat beside his public defender, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles.

The judge slammed his gavel. "We are here for the final disposition of the Bennett Family Trust assets, valued at ninety million dollars."

Evelyn stood up from her seat, interrupting the court. "Your Honor! As the widow of Arthur Bennett Sr., those assets belong to me and my son! Laura Vance is an outsider who stole our family name!"

The judge looked down at Evelyn with deep pity and disdain.

"Mrs. Bennett," the judge said, pulling out the sealed DNA report. "I suggest you sit down and shut your mouth."

"I will not sit down!" Evelyn shrieked. "My son is a Bennett! The rightful heir to Bennett Tech!"

"Your son is not a Bennett, Mrs. Bennett," the judge declared, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom like a thunderclap.

Silence descended upon the room.

Richard slowly turned his head toward his mother, his eyes wide with shock. "What... what did the judge just say?"

"According to certified court-ordered genetic testing," the judge read aloud, "Richard Bennett shares zero genetic markers with the late Arthur Bennett Sr. He is the biological son of Gregory Hayes."

Richard’s mouth opened. He looked at his mother. "Mother... is this true?"

Evelyn’s face turned a violent, ghostly shade of purple. Her jaw trembled. She couldn't speak. She couldn't breathe. Her entire thirty-five-year lie—the lie she had built her ego, her pride, and her arrogance upon—had been torn to shreds in front of news cameras and federal prosecutors.

"You..." Richard stammered, tears bursting from his eyes as he shook his handcuffed hands at his mother. "You lied to me my whole life! You made me think I was special! You made me look down on Laura! You made me ruin my marriage, my children, my life... and I’m not even a Bennett?!"

"Richard, darling, listen to me—" Evelyn gasped, taking a step back.

"GET AWAY FROM ME, YOU FRAUD!" Richard roared, lunging across the table toward his mother, his leg chains rattling violently before bailiffs tackled him to the floor.

Evelyn stumbled backward, tripped over her own heels, and collapsed onto the marble floor of the courtroom, sobbing hysterically as the entire world watched her ultimate humiliation.
