CHAPTER 11 — The Million-Dollar Offer

His name was Raymo

nd Pierce.
A sharply dressed businessman with expensive watches and perfectly polished shoes.
He walked into Harper House carrying a briefcase worth more than my first truck.
"I believe you have custody of Ethan Brooks."
His voice was smooth.
Cold.
Professional.
"Who are you?" I asked.
He smiled without warmth.
"I'm his biological father."
The room fell silent.
Ethan, who had been playing with wooden blocks nearby, immediately hid behind Noah.
He had never once mentioned his father.
Raymond noticed.
"He doesn't remember me."
"He was only two when I left."
Left.
Such a clean word.
It sounded much nicer than abandoned.
Family Court scheduled a hearing within weeks.
Raymond hired one of the best law firms in the state.
Their argument was simple.
"He has biological rights."
My attorney looked worried.
"The law may favor him."
"But he abandoned Ethan."
"Unfortunately," she sighed,
"abandonment years ago doesn't automatically erase parental rights."
For the first time since Evelyn's lawsuit...
I felt powerless.
The night before the hearing, Ethan climbed into my office.
He carried the same stuffed bear he'd brought from the shelter.
"Am I leaving tomorrow?"
I looked away.
"I don't know."
He quietly placed the bear on my desk.
"If I have to go..."
"...can you keep him?"
"So you won't forget me."
Every word shattered something inside me.
I hugged him tightly.
"I could never forget you."
Never.
Courtroom B was packed.
Raymond looked confident.
His lawyers presented financial statements.
Luxury homes.
Private schools.
Trust funds.
"He can provide a better life."
The judge nodded thoughtfully.
Then looked toward Ethan.
The little boy's feet barely touched the floor.
"Ethan..."
"Is there anything you'd like to say?"
Everyone expected silence.
Instead...
He slowly stood.
Walked toward me.
Then turned back to the judge.
"I already have a dad."
The courtroom froze.
Raymond's face went white.
Ethan pointed directly at me.
"He stayed."
"You didn't."
Not another word.
Just four simple sentences.
They carried more truth than hours of legal arguments.
The judge requested a recess.
While everyone waited...
Raymond approached me privately.
"I'll give you one million dollars."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"Walk away."
"Let me rebuild my image."
My blood ran cold.
Not rebuild his relationship.
His image.
I smiled sadly.
"You still don't understand what being a father means."
I walked away.
Leaving him standing there alone.
May you like
Exactly as he had once left his son.
