CHAPTER 5 — The Boy at My Door

Winter arrived early that year.
Snow covered the workshop roof when someone knocked just before closing.
I opened the door.
A teenage boy stood outside.
Maybe sixteen.
Thin.
Cold.
Holding a backpack that looked ready to fall apart.
"Are you Daniel?"
"Yes."
He swallowed nervously.
"I think... I think Mrs. Harper wanted me to find you."
Every hair on my arms stood up.
"What do you mean?"
He handed me an old photograph.
It showed Evelyn sitting beside him on a park bench.
She looked older.
Frailer.
But happier than I had ever seen.
On the back she had written:
"If Noah ever comes looking for me... help him the way I helped you."
The boy's voice cracked.
"I used to visit her every Saturday."
I stared at him.
"She never told me."
"I know."
"She asked me not to."
Noah explained everything.
He had been living in foster care.
His parents had died in a drunk-driving accident.
Every weekend, Evelyn secretly took him to lunch.
Bought him books.
Helped him with homework.
She even paid for tutoring.
"She said she wasn't trying to replace my grandmother."
"She just didn't want me growing up believing nobody cared."
My chest tightened.
How many people had Evelyn quietly rescued?
How many lives had she changed without telling anyone?
Noah looked around the workshop.
"She said this place would become my home someday if I needed one."
I smiled.
Then remembered the first day Evelyn opened her own door for me.
Without thinking, I stepped aside.
"You'd better come inside."
He smiled for the first time.
And suddenly...
I understood why Evelyn had loved helping strangers.
Because the moment you give someone hope...
They stop being strangers.
Weeks turned into months.
Noah became the workshop's youngest apprentice.
He learned faster than anyone.
The older workers started calling him "Kid."
For the first time in years...
He laughed.
Really laughed.
Sometimes I caught myself looking at him and wondering...
Was this how Evelyn used to look at me?
Not with pity.
But with hope.
Then one afternoon...
A black luxury SUV pulled into the parking lot.
Three expensive suits stepped out.
Their leader carried a leather briefcase.
He looked straight at me.
"Mr. Collins."
"My name is Richard Stanton."
"I'm here because of Evelyn Harper."
My heart skipped.
"What now?"
He smiled politely.
May you like
"I'm afraid your wife wasn't finished surprising you."
