CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Evelyn Took to Her Grave

I thought I had finally uncovered every secret Evelyn had left behind.

I was wrong.

Exactly thirty days after opening Harper House Workshop, an elderly woman walked through the front door carrying a faded leather handbag.

She looked at every table, every chair, every young apprentice sanding wood with careful hands.

Then she smiled.

"You built it."

"I tried," I answered.

She nodded slowly.

"No... you finished what she prayed someone would finish."

I frowned.

"You knew Evelyn?"

The woman laughed softly.

"Knew her?"

"I was her younger sister."

I froze.

"Evelyn told everyone she was an only child."

"She wanted people to believe that."

The woman introduced herself as Margaret.

There was sadness in her eyes that looked decades old.

She reached into her handbag and placed another sealed envelope on my desk.

"My sister asked me to wait one year before giving this to you."

The familiar handwriting instantly tightened my chest.

Another letter.

Another secret.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

My dearest Daniel,

If you're reading this, then you kept your promise.

You didn't sell the workshop.

That tells me I chose the right man.

I smiled through tears.

Then the letter changed everything.

There is one truth I never had the courage to tell you while I was alive.

I knew your mother.

The room spun.

No...

That couldn't be possible.

My mother had died when I was twelve.

She had lived nearly five hundred miles away.

How could Evelyn possibly know her?

I kept reading.

Your mother, Sarah Collins... saved my life thirty-eight years ago.

The words blurred before my eyes.

According to Evelyn, she had once been trapped inside a burning apartment building after an electrical fire.

Everyone ran.

Except one young nurse.

My mother.

Sarah had rushed back inside despite the flames.

She pulled Evelyn to safety.

She suffered severe burns doing it.

Months later...

My mother quietly disappeared from Evelyn's life.

Neither of them ever found each other again.

But Evelyn never forgot her name.

Years later, while reading a local newspaper, she saw my last name.

Collins.

The same uncommon surname.

She hired someone to investigate.

That's when she discovered who I really was.

I wasn't just a homeless young man.

I was the son of the woman who had once saved her life.

"I didn't choose you because you were desperate," Evelyn wrote.

"I chose you because life finally gave me a chance to repay a debt I had carried for almost forty years."

I couldn't breathe.

All this time...

I believed I had manipulated Evelyn.

In reality...

She had been protecting me before we even met.

Margaret quietly wiped away her tears.

"My sister never believed in coincidence."

I whispered,

"So... she planned all of this?"

Margaret smiled sadly.

"No."

"She simply recognized a miracle when she saw one."

That night...

I realized the box Evelyn left me had never been about exposing my greed.

It had been about revealing a destiny I never knew existed.

But another surprise was already waiting.

May you like

One that would shake my world all over again.
