CHAPTER 2 — She Had Been Watching Me All Along

My hands started shaking before I even touched the photographs.

There were dozens of them.

Me sleeping inside my pickup truck behind the grocery store.

Me washing dishes at the diner.

Me sitting alone outside a pawn shop with my head in my hands.

Even one of me crying after a debt collector repossessed the last tool chest I owned.

The pictures covered nearly two years of my life.

My mouth went dry.

"Who took these?"

The attorney didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened a folder from his briefcase and slid another document toward me.

"Mrs. Harper asked me not to explain until you read this."

It was a handwritten letter.

The paper smelled faintly of lavender.

The same scent that lingered on Evelyn's sweaters.

I unfolded it carefully.

Dear Daniel,

If you're reading this, it means I'm gone.

First... please stop blaming yourself for opening the box.

I knew you would.

I always knew you would.

My heartbeat pounded in my ears.

I kept reading.

You probably believe I never understood why you married me.

But my dear boy...

I knew before you ever asked.

I stopped breathing.

"No..."

I whispered.

"No..."

The attorney remained silent.

Almost respectfully.

The letter continued.

The week before you proposed, I hired a private investigator.

Not because I distrusted you.

Because I wanted to know why such a young man looked so broken.

Tears blurred the ink.

He told me everything.

The truck.

The debts.

The bankruptcy.

The loneliness.

The hunger.

And finally...

He told me you had begun asking questions about my property.

I couldn't continue.

I dropped the letter onto the table.

"She knew..."

The attorney nodded once.

"From the beginning."

Everything inside me collapsed.

Every smile she'd given me...

Every birthday cake...

Every warm dinner...

She had known.

And she still loved me anyway.

I buried my face in my hands.

"I used her."

The attorney quietly replied,

"She disagreed."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He opened another sealed envelope.

"This was for me."

He read Evelyn's words aloud.

"Daniel entered my house because he wanted safety.

If he stays only for money, that's my choice to accept.

If one day he learns compassion... then he'll leave richer than he ever imagined."

I couldn't stop crying.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just silent tears falling onto the table.

The attorney reached back into the box.

"There is more."

He handed me a leather-bound journal.

Its pages were worn from years of writing.

The first page read:

The Days Daniel Forgot He Was Pretending.

I frowned.

Confused.

The attorney smiled sadly.

"You should read page ninety-three."

I flipped through hundreds of entries.

Then I found it.

"Today Daniel came home with flowers.

He apologized because they weren't expensive.

He doesn't realize he forgot to mention money even once.

Today I think he bought them because he genuinely wanted me to smile.

Perhaps my lonely little husband is finally coming home."

Another page.

"Today he stayed awake beside my bed all night because my fever frightened him.

He doesn't know I was awake for hours pretending to sleep.

He kept checking whether I was breathing.

That isn't greed.

That's love.

He just hasn't forgiven himself enough to recognize it."

I broke completely.

Because she was right.

Somewhere along the way...

Without noticing...

I had stopped waiting for Evelyn to die.

I had simply been afraid of losing her.

And by the time I understood that...

It was already too late.

I looked back inside the box.

There was only one item left.

A small brass key.

Attached to it was a tag with six handwritten words:

"This belongs to your real inheritance."

The attorney smiled gently.

"I think your wife wanted you to discover the rest yourself."

I stared at the tiny key...

Wondering what door it could possibly open.

Never imagining...

May you like

It would unlock the greatest secret Evelyn had hidden from me.
