# CHAPTER 2 — “THE GROOM DROPPED TO HIS KNEES… AFTER THREE LITTLE BOYS SPOKE THE SAME FIVE WORDS”

The silence didn't end.

It grew heavier.

The violinists stopped playing.

Champagne glasses remained frozen halfway to people's lips.

Even the photographers lowered their cameras, instinctively sensing that whatever happened next would be remembered far longer than any wedding portrait.

At the altar, Ethan Montgomery slowly turned around.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

His face drained of color.

His eyes moved from Liam...

...to Noah...

...to Caleb.

Three identical little boys.

Three pairs of gray eyes.

Three familiar crooked smiles.

It was like looking into a mirror that reflected his own childhood.

"No..."

The word escaped his mouth before he realized he'd spoken aloud.

Caroline Hastings, standing beside him in her $400,000 wedding gown, frowned.

"Ethan?"

He didn't answer.

He couldn't.

His knees suddenly felt weak.

Meanwhile, Eleanor Montgomery rushed down the grand staircase with the speed of someone twenty years younger.

Her perfectly controlled expression had completely disappeared.

She stopped only inches away from the boys.

"How old are they?"

I answered calmly.

"Five."

Her breathing became uneven.

"When..."

"You already know when."

She calculated silently.

The timeline.

The divorce.

The dates.

Then realization struck like lightning.

She staggered backward.

"No..."

Around us, whispers exploded.

"They're his children..."

"They have the Montgomery eyes..."

"My God..."

"Did the family really not know?"

Caroline looked from Ethan to me, confusion slowly becoming fear.

"What are they talking about?"

No one answered.

Because Liam suddenly tugged gently on my dress.

"Mama..."

I smiled.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

The little boy looked directly at Ethan.

Then, with innocent curiosity, he asked the five words that shattered every remaining lie.

"Is that our daddy, Mama?"

The estate froze.

Someone dropped an entire tray of crystal glasses.

They exploded across the marble floor.

Ethan looked as though he'd been punched in the chest.

His lips trembled.

He slowly walked toward the boys.

Stopping only a few feet away.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I..."

He swallowed hard.

"My name is Ethan."

Caleb tilted his head.

"We know."

"You do?"

Noah nodded.

"Mama never lied."

The crowd fell silent again.

I had never poisoned my children against their father.

Never.

Not once.

They knew his name.

They knew his photographs.

They simply believed he had never wanted to meet them.

That truth hurt Ethan far more than hatred ever could.

He suddenly dropped onto one knee.

Not because anyone asked him to.

Because his legs could no longer hold him.

"I'm..."

His voice cracked.

"I'm so sorry."

Liam looked at his brothers.

Then quietly asked,

"Can grown-ups cry too?"

Before I could answer...

A sharp voice sliced through the moment.

"THIS IS A LIE!"

Caroline.

Her wedding bouquet crashed onto the ground.

She pointed directly at me.

"You planned this!"

"You waited until today!"

"You want money!"

Every guest turned toward her.

I smiled gently.

"Money?"

I pulled out my phone.

My assistant handed me a leather folder.

Inside sat the latest financial rankings from Forbes Private Wealth Advisors.

I opened the page.

Then placed it directly into Caroline's shaking hands.

Her eyes widened.

She flipped another page.

Then another.

The blood disappeared from her face.

"What..."

Someone standing behind her whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"Impossible..."

"She owns Meridian Digital Global?"

"The agency that just acquired three Fortune 500 contracts?"

Another CEO stepped closer.

"Her company is worth nearly three billion dollars."

A senator quietly leaned toward his wife.

"That's almost triple what the Montgomery holdings are currently valued at."

The whispers turned into stunned silence.

Caroline slowly lowered the folder.

"You..."

"You don't need Ethan."

I laughed softly.

"I stopped needing Ethan five years ago."

Then I looked directly at Eleanor.

"I only came because my sons deserved to know where they came from."

Eleanor's hands began trembling uncontrollably.

For the first time in forty years...

The woman who ruled the Montgomery empire looked frightened.

Because she suddenly understood something terrifying.

She hadn't lost a daughter-in-law.

May you like

She had driven away the greatest fortune the Montgomery family had ever seen.

And the nightmare was only beginning.
