CHAPTER 5 — “THE DNA RESULTS WERE REVEALED IN FRONT OF EVERYONE… BUT THE BIGGEST SHOCK WASN'T WHO THE FATHER WAS”

Three days later...
Chicago couldn't stop talking about the Montgomery scandal.
News helicopters circled the estate.
Business analysts predicted the collapse of Montgomery Holdings.
Television hosts debated whether Eleanor should resign.
Then another headline appeared.
"Montgomery Family Requests Official DNA Test."
It wasn't my idea.
It was Eleanor's.
"If they're truly Montgomery heirs," she had declared publicly, "the science will prove it."
I agreed immediately.
Not because I needed proof.
Because she did.
The private laboratory reserved its largest conference room.
Independent attorneys.
Medical specialists.
Board members.
Journalists.
Every major stakeholder attended.
The atmosphere felt more like a courtroom than a medical appointment.
The technician finally walked in carrying three sealed envelopes.
He looked toward Arthur.
"You asked that the results be opened publicly."
Arthur nodded.
"Proceed."
The first envelope opened.
Probability of paternity: 99.9999%.
Liam.
Ethan's biological son.
The second.
99.9999%.
Noah.
The third.
99.9999%.
Caleb.
Every doubt disappeared instantly.
Cameras flashed wildly.
Reporters rushed toward the exits to file breaking news.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
She had lost.
Completely.
But Arthur raised one hand.
"There's one more envelope."
Confused whispers spread across the room.
The technician looked surprised.
"Sir... this file wasn't requested by Mrs. Montgomery."
"I requested it personally."
Arthur accepted the final document.
Then slowly looked at Ethan.
"For years..."
he said quietly,
"I blamed this young woman for destroying our family."
He looked at me with deep regret.
"I was wrong."
Arthur handed the document to Ethan.
"What is this?"
"Read it."
Ethan's eyes moved across the page.
His face changed.
Then changed again.
He looked up in complete disbelief.
"No..."
Arthur nodded sadly.
"The investigation I ordered after your divorce was never about her."
He slowly turned toward Eleanor.
"It was about finding out who lied to me."
The report contained dozens of emails.
Financial records.
Private phone logs.
Hidden payments.
Evidence proving Eleanor had secretly intercepted every letter Ethan and I had tried to send each other during the final months of our marriage.
She had forged emails.
Deleted messages.
Lied about phone calls.
Even convinced Ethan that I had demanded money in exchange for staying married.
And she had convinced me that Ethan wanted me gone forever.
Years of manipulation.
Manufactured by one person.
Eleanor.
Ethan's hands began shaking violently.
"You..."
He stared at his mother.
"You made me believe she stopped loving me."
Eleanor whispered weakly,
"I did what was necessary."
"No."
Arthur's voice thundered across the room.
"You destroyed your own son."
For the first time in her life...
Eleanor Montgomery stood completely alone.
No board members defended her.
No attorneys spoke.
Even longtime family friends quietly stepped away.
Arthur removed the Montgomery family signet ring from his finger.
The symbol every generation had worn for nearly a century.
He placed it on the conference table.
Then looked at Ethan.
"The Montgomery name doesn't belong to the richest person."
He glanced toward the triplets playing together in the corner.
"It belongs to the one who protects this family."
Ethan slowly walked toward me.
Not demanding forgiveness.
Not asking for another chance.
He simply whispered,
"I can't undo five years."
I nodded.
"No."
"But if our sons ever allow it..."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I'd like to earn the right to be called their father."
Before I could answer, Liam ran over holding three toy cars.
He handed one to Ethan.
"We need one more player."
Ethan smiled through tears.
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.

But for the first time in five years...
Hope quietly entered the Montgomery family again.
