Chapter 2 - The Silent AdvanceEvan’s phone chimed. He glanced down, expecting instructions to stall, but the command was far more aggressive.

Open the main data feed to the boardroom overhead projector, Claire’s text instructed. Queue File 902-B.
Evan swallowed hard. File 902-B was the restricted vault storage containing the master encryption keys and the forensic audit trails of every corporate subsidiary Hartwell had spun off over the past decade. Accessing it from a terminal inside an active executive session triggered a level-four system alert.
"Evan," Martin’s voice boomed across the room, snapping the young analyst back to reality. "Are you paying attention to the indemnity clauses, or are you just texting your girlfriend? We need your sign-off on the liquidity transfer protocols."
Evan forced a tight, shaky smile. "Sorry, Mr. Vale. Just double-checking the subsidiary tax filings to ensure there are no loose ends for the auditors."
"There are no loose ends," Grant Mercer snapped, waving a hand dismissively. "Northstar's legal team has scrubbed every ledger. Call the vote."
Martin nodded, rising to his feet. He picked up a heavy gavel resting on a granite block. "All in favor of ratifying the Northstar emergency share issuance and executing the structural restructuring of Hartwell Advanced Textiles, signify by saying aye."
"Aye," chorused the six compromised directors in unison.
"The motion carries," Martin announced, a triumphant smirk spreading across his face. He raised the gavel to strike the block. "Hartwell Advanced Textiles is officially—"
CLACK.
The massive overhead projector suspended in the center of the ceiling suddenly whirred to life. The motorized screen descended from its recess with a low, mechanical hum, unrolling right over the main presentation whiteboard.
The room plunged into sudden silence.
On the massive white screen, instead of Northstar’s acquisition prospectus, a high-resolution, full-color document materialized. At the top, stamped in crimson ink, were the words: FORENSIC HANDWRITING ANALYSIS & CERTIFIED NOTARY FRAUD REPORT.
Beneath it was a side-by-side comparison of Claire Hartwell’s signature from three years ago and the forged power of attorney currently resting in Martin’s leather briefing folder.
Martin’s hand froze mid-air, the gavel hovering inches above the block. His face drained of color, shifting from a healthy, prosperous pink to a sickly, mottled grey.
"What is this?" Martin choked out, his voice cracking slightly. He spun around, glaring at Evan. "What did you do?"
May you like
Evan slowly pushed his chair back from the table, standing up to his full height. He didn't look at Martin. Instead, his eyes were fixed on the frosted glass doors behind the committee.
"I didn't do anything, Mr. Vale," Evan said clearly. "Someone else has finally arrived for the meeting."
