Chapter 2 - Echoes of a Set-upWithin three hours, Jasper was sitting in the executive suite of a private Denver hotel, staring at a thick dossier. His head of security, Marcus, stood silently across the table.

"It doesn't make sense, boss," Marcus said quietly. "Five years ago, when you ordered the investigation into Mrs. Sterling's alleged affair, the intelligence came directly from your former Vice President of Operations, Richard Thorne."

Jasper’s breath hitched. "Richard?"

"Yes. Richard provided the decrypted text logs, the hotel reservations, and the offshore bank transfers linked to Clara’s research account. But look at these newly uncovered primary records from the clinic in Raleigh." Marcus slid a medical document across the mahogany table.

Jasper scanned the paper, his hands shaking.

Patient: Clara Sterling

Diagnosis: High-Risk Triplet Pregnancy (Conceived 6 weeks prior to marriage dissolution)

Note: Patient requested absolute confidentiality due to ongoing corporate espionage threats against Sterling Energy.

"She was pregnant before I threw her out..." Jasper choked out, the room spinning around him. "The texts... the secret meetups in hotels..."

"They weren't with a lover, Mr. Sterling," Marcus revealed, his voice solemn. "They were with Dr. Julian Vance—a private medical specialist and high-level government whistleblower. Clara was secretly transferring her clean-energy research to Vance to protect it because she discovered someone inside your company was attempting to sabotage the technology and sell it on the black market."

Jasper dropped the dossier as if it were on fire. The betrayal he had felt five years ago shattered into a million pieces, replaced by a sickening realization.

He hadn't been cheated on. He had been manipulated.

His obsession with protecting his empire had made him blind. Richard Thorne—his trusted right-hand man—had planted forged evidence to destroy Jasper’s trust in Clara, forcing her out of the picture so Thorne could steal her revolutionary patents. And Jasper had handed Clara her ruined reputation on a silver platter.
