Chapter 7 - Unspoken BondsThree days later, Jasper woke up in the intensive care unit of Denver General Hospital. The harsh smell of antiseptic filled his nose, and the steady beep of a heart monitor echoed softly in the room.

He shifted slightly, groaning from the sharp pain in his abdomen.
"Don't try to move," a voice said gentle from the side of the bed.
Jasper turned his head slowly. Clara was sitting in a chair beside his bed, holding a warm cup of tea. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were filled with a strange warmth he hadn't seen in over half a decade.
"You're awake," she said softly. "The doctor said the knife missed your vital organs by less than an inch. You lost a lot of blood."
"The boys... are they okay?" Jasper asked, his voice raspy.
"They're traumatized, but they're safe," Clara replied. She paused, setting her cup down on the tray. "They've been asking about you."
Jasper blinked, stunned. "They have?"
"I told them... I told them you were a brave man who protected us," Clara said quietly. "Ethan asked if you were a superhero. Mason wanted to give you his favorite toy car to help you heal."
Tears welled in Jasper's eyes. He turned his head away, struggling to keep his emotions in check. "I don't deserve their kindness, Clara. And I don't deserve yours."
"No, you don't," Clara agreed honestly. "What you did five years ago shattered my faith in people. It took me years to rebuild my life from scratch, to build a safe world for our sons where nobody could hurt them."
She reached out and gently rested her hand over his.
"But what you did three nights ago... putting your life on the line without hesitation to shield us... proved to me that the man I fell in love with wasn't completely gone."
Jasper looked back at her, hope flickering in his chest for the first time in years. "Does this mean... I can be part of their lives?"
May you like
"It means we start over," Clara said firmly. "Not as husband and wife. Not as partners. But as two people who care about three little boys who deserve to know who their father really is. Step by step, Jasper. No secrets. No arrogance."
"Step by step," Jasper agreed, holding her hand tightly.
