Chapter 10 - THE TRUE HEIR TO THE EMPIREThree months later, the front page of every major financial newspaper and society magazine featured a headline that shocked the corporate world:

MERCER TECH ANNOUNCES NEW CO-CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER: GRACE PARKER.
Atop the historic Mercer estate, the sun was setting over the Blue Ridge Mountains, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and violet.
The grand ballroom, once the site of Vanessa Whitmore’s humiliating downfall, was now filled with laughter, classical music, and two hundred of the country's most respected industry leaders, statesmen, and close friends.
There were no fake smiles tonight. No superficial games.
Standing on the raised dais beneath the crystal chandelier, Jonathan Mercer looked out over the crowd. But his eyes quickly found the woman standing beside him.
Grace wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue silk evening gown that hugged her elegant frame, her light brown hair pinned back with a delicate diamond-encrusted hairpin shaped like a single, elegant reed.
Henry Mercer sat in the front row, beaming with absolute pride as he raised a glass of champagne in their direction.
Jonathan gently took Grace’s hand in his. The calluses from the wooden training staffs were still faintly visible on her fingers—a badge of honor that no diamond ring could ever replace.
"You know," Jonathan murmured, leaning down so only she could hear, "when you caught those four champagne glasses three months ago, I thought you were just the most skilled maid in the city."
Grace smiled, her eyes sparkling with warmth and quiet humor. "And what do you think now, Mr. Mercer?"
Jonathan reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He didn't open it with hesitation this time. He flipped it open to reveal a custom-designed ring—not a pink diamond meant for show, but a platinum band engraved with a delicate, intertwining pattern of hollow reeds.
"I think," Jonathan whispered, dropping gently to one knee in front of two hundred guests who instantly fell into a breathless, respectful hush, "that I am the luckiest billionaire alive, and I spent my whole life looking for an empire, only to realize that the heart of it was standing right beside my beverage cart."
A collective gasp of joy and awe rippled through the ballroom.
Grace looked down at him, her throat tightening with emotion. The quiet, protective wall she had built around her heart finally melted away, replaced by the fierce, unwavering loyalty of a partner who stood as an equal.
Grace smiled, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Get up, Jonathan," she whispered softly, extending her hand to pull him to his feet. "You're a CEO now. Stop kneeling to your employees."
Jonathan rose, slipping the platinum band onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, joyous applause.

In the back of the room, Martha Reed smiled, wiping a stray tear from her cheek, while Henry raised his glass to the mountains.
The empire was safe. The legacy was unbroken. And the maid who never fought back had finally claimed her rightful throne.
