Chapter 9 - SHADOWS IN THE VAULTThe subterranean vault was bathed in eerie, flashing red emergency lights that cast long, distorted shadows across stacked crates of historical documents and titanium security lockers.

Grace and Jonathan moved side by side down the central corridor, their footsteps completely silent against the concrete floor.

At the far end of the vault, standing before the open titanium safe, was a tall, imposing figure clad in matte-black tactical gear, holding a leather-bound archival ledger under one arm.

The intruder turned slowly, a metallic face-shield gleaming in the red light.

"Grace Parker," a deep, raspy voice echoed off the concrete walls. "The last surviving branch of the Briar Ridge lineage. I thought we cleared out your grandfather's hall twenty years ago."

Grace tightened her grip on her wooden staff, her body sinking into the classic, shoulder-width defensive stance.

"You missed a branch," Grace replied evenly.

"And you brought a billionaire pet to play hero," the intruder sneered, drawing a gleaming combat knife from his belt. "Let's see how well your parlor tricks work against real steel."

The intruder lunged forward with blinding speed, closing the distance in a fraction of a second.

He thrust the combat knife straight at Jonathan’s chest.

Jonathan didn't panic. Remembering the physics of The Hollow Reed that Grace had drilled into him over the past week, he didn't try to block the blade head-on. Instead, he pivoted on his heel, using his hickory staff to deflect the knife-hand outward, redirecting the intruder's momentum into empty air.

Before the intruder could recover, Grace was already moving.

Her staff whipped through the air with the speed of a striking viper, connecting squarely with the back of the intruder's knees.

CRACK.

The masked man buckled, hitting the concrete floor with a violent thud.

Grace didn't hesitate. She stepped over him, pinned his weapon-bearing arm to the floor with her boot, and brought the heavy end of her staff down to rest gently—yet threateningly—against his throat.

"End of the line," Grace whispered.

The intruder let out a raspy, defeated laugh beneath his mask. "You think... you think I'm the only one? The Iron Gate... has already filed the injunctions. Mercer Freight... is already finished."

Jonathan walked over, picking up the archival ledger that the intruder had dropped. He brushed the dust off the cover and looked down at the defeated assassin.

"Tell your bosses," Jonathan said coldly, his voice ringing with absolute authority, "that the Mercer empire isn't built on paper. It's built on blood, loyalty, and people who know how to stand their ground."

Jonathan pressed his comms button. "Security, secure the vault. Transport this trash to federal custody."

As security guards swarmed into the vault to drag the intruder away, Jonathan turned to Grace. The red emergency lights flickered, shifting back to standard white illumination as the lockdown lifted.

Grace lowered her staff, exhaling a slow, controlled breath.

Jonathan stepped closer to her, his heart pounding not from the adrenaline of the fight, but from the overwhelming realization of how deeply entwined their lives had become.
