Chapter 8 - THE BREACH AT MIDNIGHTThe subterranean security vault of the Mercer estate was a fortress carved directly into the bedrock of the Blue Ridge Mountains, protected by biometric scanners, reinforced titanium doors, and closed-circuit monitoring systems.

Jonathan, Grace, and Martha sprinted out of the elevator and into the high-tech command center.

On the massive multi-screen monitor wall, feed number twelve showed a single figure dressed in black tactical gear moving through the western drainage tunnel with terrifying, ghost-like efficiency.

"How did they bypass the biometric sensors?" Jonathan demanded, his executive calmness instantly snapping into tactical command mode. "Those tunnels are sealed by military-grade encryption."

"They didn't bypass them," Grace said, her eyes locked onto the screen, narrowing as she analyzed the intruder's movement pattern. "Look at the posture. Look at the way their weight shifts over the damp concrete."

Jonathan looked closer. "You know who that is?"

"I know what they are," Grace replied, a cold, hard edge creeping into her voice. "That’s not a common cat burglar. That’s a practitioner of the Iron Gate—the rival discipline to The Hollow Reed. For fifty years, my grandfather’s lineage and the Iron Gate have been bitter enemies."

Before Jonathan could issue an order to armed security, the red alarm klaxons blared across the subterranean bunker.

WARNING: VAULT DOOR BREACHED. SECTOR FOUR LOCKDOWN INITIATED.

"They're after the original patent ledgers from 1975," Henry Mercer’s raspy voice echoed from the doorway as the elderly man rolled himself in on a motorized wheelchair, his eyes burning with fierce determination. "Those ledgers contain the original land grants and logistics routes that my company was built on. If the Iron Gate syndicate gets their hands on them, they can dismantle Mercer Freight through fraudulent historical claims."

Jonathan reached for his radio headset. "Deploy the tactical response team. Surround sector four."

"No," Grace said, stepping in front of the console and holding up her hand. "Your security team uses standard military CQB tactics. Against a master of the Iron Gate, they'll be disarmed and neutralized in thirty seconds."

"Then what do we do?" Jonathan asked, his eyes locking onto hers with total trust.

Grace turned toward the armory locker built into the wall of the command center. She punched in a six-digit code, and the steel door popped open to reveal a pair of heavy, traditional wooden training staffs—crafted from solid hickory and banded with iron, identical to the ones her grandfather used to keep in the mountain hall.

Grace reached inside, her fingers wrapping smoothly around the polished wood. She pulled one out and tossed the second staff across the room toward Jonathan.

Jonathan caught it instinctively, his hands gripping the weighted wood with surprising balance.

"You're coming with me," Grace stated, her eyes burning with an intense, warrior-like resolve.

Jonathan offered a cold, dangerous smile, twirling the staff once to test its weight. "I told you, Grace—I bought the company. I'm not letting anyone burn down the foundation."
