Chapter 3 - THE HEIR'S OBSESSIONWithin twenty minutes, the ballroom had emptied of guests.

The elite socialites, eager to feed the morning gossip columns, fled the mansion like rats from a sinking ship, their phones buzzing furiously as they uploaded stolen clips of the security footage to social media. By midnight, #TheBillionaireFiancee and #TheMaidWithTheIronHands were trending number one and two worldwide.

In the cavernous, quiet expanse of the grand ballroom, only four people remained: Henry Mercer, Jonathan Mercer, Martha Reed, and Grace Parker.

Grace stood near the service cart, quietly picking up the remaining shards of crystal into a dustpan. Her movements were calm, methodical, and entirely unbothered by the fact that she had just turned a multi-million-dollar wedding into a public execution.

Jonathan walked slowly across the polished hardwood floor. He stopped a few feet from her, staring down at her with a mix of awe, curiosity, and a strange, burning intensity that hadn't been there before.

"You caught four glasses in three seconds," Jonathan said, breaking the silence. "Without looking at the last two."

Grace didn't stop sweeping. "Physics, Mr. Mercer. And a lot of practice."

"My grandfather called it The Hollow Reed," Jonathan continued, stepping closer. "He said your grandfather saved his life fifty years ago using the same martial discipline. Why are you working as a housemaid in my estate?"

Grace paused. She slowly straightened up, holding the dustpan in one hand, and lifted her light brown eyes to meet his. There was no subservience in her gaze anymore—only an unshakable, quiet strength.

"Because honest work is nothing to be ashamed of, Mr. Mercer," Grace replied evenly. "And because my family has a debt of honor to your grandfather that my father spent his whole life talking about. When I heard Henry Mercer needed reliable, discreet domestic staff for his private estate, I applied under my mother’s maiden name. I wanted to see if the family he built was worthy of the man who saved him."

Henry Mercer, leaning heavily on his ebony cane, walked over, a tear glistening in his sharp blue eye.

"And did we pass, child?" Henry asked, his voice trembling slightly.

Grace looked at Henry, then glanced briefly at Jonathan. A faint, enigmatic smile touched the corner of her lips.

"You passed, Mr. Mercer," Grace said softly. "Your grandson... is still earning his grade."

Jonathan felt a jolt in his chest—a strange, electric sensation he had never experienced in his thirty-four years of life. Women threw themselves at him every single day, offering beauty, status, and compliance. This woman had just dismissed his entire empire with a polite smile and a dustpan.

And for the first time in his life, Jonathan Mercer wanted nothing more than to prove himself worthy.

"Then let me start earning it right now," Jonathan said, stepping directly into her personal space. "Stay. Not as a maid. As my chief of security and corporate risk consultant. Starting tomorrow morning."

Grace blinked, her composure finally cracking just a fraction of an inch of surprise.
